With over 20 years of experience in the water treatment industry, I bring substantial knowledge and expertise to our new business. After receiving intensive training in water treatment during my time with the U.S. Army, I was deployed to the Middle East in support of key military operations. Since relocating to the Pacific Northwest, I have worked for various water treatment companies, helping families improve their water quality. From addressing common water issues to treating some of the worst water conditions I've encountered, I have the skills and network of industry contacts to tackle any water treatment challenge. Though our business is young, my depth of experience equips me to serve our customers at the highest level.

"The service people came quicker than expected, they were pleasant enough and did identify a small filter that needed rinsing and they identified it quickly. I'd give them an A on that part but the cost they charged is an F rating. They took a regular bottle of drinking water and poured it through the filter, put the filter back in and they were done. Then they charged me over $540 for this. They did absolutely nothing else and when I asked why it was so expensive, they said the travel time. I am 30 minutes from their area. When I first spoke to the owner, who was not the one who came out, he never said there would be an extra charge for my location. The fix was so minor, the time spent was maybe 15 minutes and they overcharged me. If you use them beware of their very high charges."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

A lower-end water softener would cost around $900, not including installation. Each home has different requirements, water hardness, and number of inhabitants, so there’s a huge range in pricing—$600 to over $6,000. The average water softener repair bill is around $500, meaning it’s a much better option to repair any issues and only replace your softener if absolutely necessary.

It depends on the type of surface. For instance, if you’re trying to get rid of hard water deposits on glass, you can spray vinegar onto the surface and wipe it off with a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge. However, if the deposits are on granite or natural stone, it’s better to use baking soda and water rather than vinegar or other acidic cleaners.

Experts recommend that you put two to four bags of potassium chloride in your water softener every month. This amount depends on how much is in the bag (40 pounds is most common) and what your water softener manufacturer recommends. For more specific advice, talk to a water softener pro in your area and read the manual that came with your system.

It’s sometimes possible to install a water softener yourself, but it’s usually better to hire a water softener professional to get the job done. Water softeners involve plumbing and electrical work, which usually require permits and a certified expert to sign off on the work. Not only is it dangerous to work with these utility lines, but it’s also not legal in many areas. Plus, improper installation or system sizing might not fix your hard water issue and could lead to an increased risk of leaks, fires, and other property damage.

To get utilities set up on a property, you first have to contact the local department of planning to determine whether your property is able to connect to public utilities. From there, you can work with a structural engineer and/or a building contractor to design the layout of utility lines on the property. The pros will need this information as they begin securing building permits before they can start adding lines.

If your property isn’t able to connect to public utilities, you’ll need to consider working with pros to develop a comfortable off-grid home that will meet your needs.
