"Jeremy and his staff are superior. The kitchen backsplash he installed for us turned out beautifully. He is precise and very particular, which is what we wanted. When my husband mistakenly approved the way the grouting was done (It still looked perfect, I just wanted the grout at a 45 degree angle on the tile edge) while I was away, Jeremy didn't hesitate to come back to make the grout the way I'd wanted it. "Yes, the job was well done and on time. We had a problem with the tile and grout in our walk-in shower. He explained what the problems were with the original installation and then cleaned the tile and replaced the grout. He also installed shower bars which will help us from falling in the shower. A cement backer board is not needed for laying tile on concrete. Sometimes referred to as a cementitious backer unit, or CBU, backer board should be used if the subfloor is plywood or OSB. The backer board provides a base on which to install the tiles that isn’t as likely to be damaged by any accidental water seepage as natural materials would be.

There are several different products that allow underwater repair. Pool putty can help repair chips, cracks, and loose tiles without draining your pool, but it should only be used for a temporary fix. Certain two-part epoxy adhesives will cure underwater, too. That said, while it is technically possible to fix pool tiles underwater, it is usually not ideal, depending on the depth of your pool. You will still have to reach the tile, which means you might have to dive and make the repair while submerged.

Tile shouldn’t be set tight against the tub. Bathtubs can expand when filled, and they can shift slightly with the weight of occupants. For this reason, it’s important to leave a slight gap between the bathtub and the first row of tile. Aim for a narrow gap of approximately 1/16 of an inch, filled with caulk, to allow for this expansion and movement while still allowing for tile shower waterproofing.

Thinset mortar is the best adhesive for ceramic tiles on concrete. It is easy to work with and has a slower dry time than mastic or epoxy mortars. This longer dry time gives the installer more time to adjust tiles, which is especially useful for DIYers who may not have tile installation experience. It can also be built up to help level any depressions or gaps in the concrete subfloor.

Taking the time to properly prepare your tile backsplash before painting and treating it with care afterward is the best way to ensure its longevity. While the tile can last for the life of the home, you may have to repaint it after a few years. However, using only mild cleanser and water to keep it clean can maximize the paint's lifespan.
