"Based on Angi, Yelp and Google reviews, we chose a couple of well-reviewed, Generac-certified companies to come out for estimates for installing a whole-house generator. Given the amount of house/property that we wanted to power (our house, septic, well, mother-in-law dwelling, etc.), both recommended the 26kW and both were about the same price for installation. But we liked Joseph's knowledge, honesty and responsiveness to our email/text questions afterward, so we went with Smart Electric. Lead electrician Keith and crew were prompt, friendly and professional throughout the installation on the day we had scheduled. A wiring issue required Keith to return for several Saturday visits, and we appreciated his communication and determination to make sure we were completely satisfied. We would definitely call Smart Eclectic again."

"Our home had inadequate electric service. McCarthy Electric provided a bid to install 200 amp service to support our growing needs. My interactions with their team has been the most satisfying experience I have had with a service provider. The service was upgraded per the bid with no drama, in a timely fashion. I was kept informed of important developments in a courteous and professional manner. I will be a return customer for any future electrical needs."

"I had told them I would be buying an EV and they said to give them a ring when I was ready to install the charger. Bought the car on Saturday, called them on Monday, installed on Thursday with no drama, apparently excellent workmanship, and in a timely manner. They were even able to do it without disturbing our internet access despite having to move breakers around."

"From the estimate with Tyler, to install, through follow up support, SeaTown was exceptional. They were not the cheapest, but Tyler took the time to understand our needs and answer all of our questions. Way more knowledgeable and friendly then the other two quotes we got. Tyler made it an easy choice to go with SeaTown."

"Seatown is a well-oiled machine! From the start (estimate of costs) to the final installation and safety checks I knew I picked the right company to do my generator project. All employees that were involved were knowledgeable and answered all my questions thoroughly and in a way that made sense to me. I plan to use this company again."

"I hired Austin to install an EV charger in my garage. Austin was very attentive, coming out on my schedule to do a quick walkthrough of the garage and give me an estimate. I found his estimate to be very fair, and we scheduled a time this last weekend to have it installed. Austin gathered all information he needed and arrived on time to perform the job. Overall it took about 4.5 hours for him to run the conduit for the charger to the other side of the garage, and install the charger. The charger worked right off the bat, and the inspector just stopped by and said it was good work. Overall, I would recommend Austin to anyone looking to do electrical work in their home, and I will absolutely use him again."

"R-Tech did a fantastic job! Ken installed 3 fans, a lighting fixture (that required re-wiring), and about 15 dimmers. He was quick to respond, and arrived on time, both for his estimate and the day he was scheduled to work. He cleaned up where he worked, so you wouldn't even know any work was done. He noticed one of my fans was not hung correctly (which was over the master bed). I'm so glad he caught this or it would have fallen down on one me or one of my animals. I would definitively hire him again. P.S. My dog liked him - he's animal friendly."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.

In many cases, yes. There are models called dual-fuel generators and fuel switches, but only between certain types of fuel. For example, with the right setup you can convert a generator from natural gas to propane. Some allow switching between diesel and gasoline. There are even tri-fuel generators available in some cases, which adds a large layer of security if you are worried about fuel availability in times of crisis. Always check your generator capabilities and manual instructions before trying to switch fuels. Some generators can use another fuel but may need a fuel conversion kit to prep them first.

Whole-house generators need to be installed on level ground several feet away from walls and other objects. Because they tap into the electrical system directly, they usually need to be close to your home electrical panel for a transfer switch installation. It also helps with installation if they are near to a gas line or propane tank installation.
