"Sean and Richard did an amazing job getting rid of the woodpeckers getting into our attic. They removed the existing woodpecker nests from the attic and installed "bird blocks" around our house in the likely places. They were very nice to work with and very professional. They came when they said they would and did an amazing job, for a fair price and finished quite quickly. They did everything they said they were going to do. They gave us a guarantee and encouraged us to contact him with any questions. I did text Sean, and he responded quickly with a good answer. I would highly recommend U.S. Animal Control of the Great Northwest!"

Bird Control questions, answered by experts

No single deterrent will work 100 percent of the time, so we suggest combining deterrents to ensure your seed has the best possible chance to grow. Using bird netting over your seed, with physical deterrents like mylar tape coupled with hanging bird feeders at the edges of your growing area—and removing any bird’s nests, if possible—will give your seeds the best possible chance for success.

High-frequency bird repellent devices are effective at driving away birds, which is their intended purpose. However, these devices also tend to have unintended negative consequences. For example, if you or your neighbors own pets, the high-pitched noise emitted by these electronic devices will cause them distress and may even make them aggressive.

Some birds of prey, like owls, hunt at night. Hawks are diurnal and need good light to see their prey. You could see them circling anytime from dawn to dusk. Species like the common red-tailed hawk are most active in the early morning and late evening when their prey is also typically on the go.

When it comes to keeping birds from doing their business on your porch rails, you have several DIY options and home remedies you can try:

  • Tie a fishing line from one end of the deck post to the other. Birds won’t be able to see the line across the railing, so they can’t land on it.

  • Hang wind chimes close by, which may scare birds away.

  • Apply a bird gel repellent to the railings, which contains smells that birds generally don’t like. Or, similarly, you can apply citronella or lemon oil around the railings, since birds don’t like strong smells.

Most treatments take 1-3 hours, but severe infestations may require multiple visits.
