"Sean and Richard did an amazing job getting rid of the woodpeckers getting into our attic. They removed the existing woodpecker nests from the attic and installed "bird blocks" around our house in the likely places. They were very nice to work with and very professional. They came when they said they would and did an amazing job, for a fair price and finished quite quickly. They did everything they said they were going to do. They gave us a guarantee and encouraged us to contact him with any questions. I did text Sean, and he responded quickly with a good answer. I would highly recommend U.S. Animal Control of the Great Northwest!"

Bird Control questions, answered by experts

When woodpeckers start banging on your walls or roof, they are probably looking for insects to eat, storing nuts for winter, drilling a hole to make a nest, or communicating with other birds to establish territory or find a mate.

The size of the hole can help determine the reason for the pecking. Small irregular holes are a result of insect hunts. Acorn holes are more consistently sized and often fitted with a nut in the middle. Nest holes are large and have rounded edges. If the bird is pecking to mark its territory or attract a mate, it may leave dents rather than holes, and the noise will stop when the mating season starts in spring.

Once the animals and their young are out of the house, remove the nest and locate any entry points. Some may be difficult to find because some animals can fit through very small holes. Once you’ve located as many entry points as possible, use materials such as metal or masonry to block off the entry. Ideally, you should choose materials that most animals cannot chew through. Create a one-way door or flap to allow animals to leave but not return. Additional methods include using repellants designed to make an area unappealing to the types of animals that find your home so inviting.

You’ll want to call a licensed and insured wildlife removal company that offers:

  • Full property inspection—indoor and outdoor

  • Proper animal identification

  • Written management plan with follow-up visits included

  • Humane removal techniques

  • Preventative exclusion measures

If it’s an emergency and you can’t wait, you’ll need to contact an emergency animal control company near you.

Some animals, such as bats or birds, will be able to get out of chimneys on their own since they can fly. Other animals, however, may have a harder time and will require the help of a professional to escape. Squirrels and raccoons in particular may become stuck inside a chimney, especially if you have a buildup of soot or creosote inside. This can prevent them from being able to climb out, in which case you’ll need to call an animal control expert to help remove them.

Natural swimming pools are designed to deter pests, including mosquitoes. While any body of water can potentially attract pests, the natural filtration system keeps the water clean and constantly moving. Mosquitoes specifically are attracted to standing water, so the continuously circulating water in a natural pool makes it an inhospitable environment for them.
