"Carlos with JS Landscape and Excavation was prompt and responsive the whole way through, from the initial meeting to providing the estimate to scheduling and completing the work - it all happened within a matter of days. On the day of the project, Carlos and his team showed up on time and got to work right away. They worked quickly while still maintaining a high quality of work. They finished quicker than I expected and the overall cost was right in line with the estimate. I would definitely hire JS Landscape and Excavation again in the future."

"They came to look at some work on a Saturday and just did it rite then. I wasn't expecting that so was thrilled. Did a great job on a totally miserable project, got it done quickly, cleaned up and cost was very fair. I'd recommend them in a heartbeat"

"We had such a great experience with Harry and his team. We had them replace several retaining walls (some failing, some just for aesthetic reason) and they were so helpful from the beginning to the end. Harry guided me through the (long) permitting process with the city and his team was able to start not too long after we finally got the permit. Communication was great and Harry and his team gave great advice on the best plan for our yard. We are thrilled with the result and would hire them again in a heartbeat."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

While you can save some money by digging your own pool, you may end up paying more in construction equipment rental fees in the long run. You could, however, focus your DIY energies on lowering the cost of leveling your lawn for your pool or filling in surrounding landscaping after construction.

To locate an underground downspout, you should start by identifying where the above ground gutter drains. Look for an entry point, such as a pipe or elbow leading into the ground. Follow the surface path for signs like depressions, landscaping disruptions, or wet areas after rain. You can use a metal detector or plumber’s snake to trace the pipe underground. For deeper pipes, a professional locator tool or camera inspection may be necessary. Visual markers or utility maps can also guide the search.

The rules for trenching and excavation include setting up and following safety protocols, learning how to use tools and machines properly, and ensuring there is a safe exit for all workers. Keep heavy equipment and materials away from the edge of the hole or trench. Call the 811 dig line before starting any excavation or trenching project to ensure you don’t hit any electrical or gas lines.

Septic drain lines (or leach lines) are typically buried between 18 and 36 inches underground, and should be at least 6 inches below the surface. These pipes are perforated and surrounded by filtering materials like sand or gravel. Burying the lines at this depth helps minimize odors and allows bacteria and other biological processes in the soil to effectively treat the wastewater. Burying lines too close to the surface can cause issues unless the soil is very compact and stable.

Yes, an excavation company is the best option for land grading and yard leveling. General landscapers might be able to tackle these projects, but an excavation company will do a better job because they’re used to operating the necessary heavy machinery. Landscapers might opt to do the work manually, which takes much longer and could cost you more in labor fees. Finally, excavation companies will understand local regulations and know when you need permits to legalize the work, while a landscaper might not.
