Small jobs welcome

"I have used RLC Contracting for several home improvement & renovation projects over the past 20+years. They have always been a professional & honest company, who will work with your wants, needs & budget. As a locally owned/operated Hampton Roads business, they have "skin in the game" where reputation is concerned & why referrals are so important. I highly recommend RCL Contracting & Owners, Rick & Linda Jenkins. Give them a call, you'll be glad you did!"

"I hired Ultimate Craftsman to tear down an old deck and build a new larger screened in porch with sky lights in it's place. The designer Dave really listened to what I wanted and got on paper my exact vision. The owner Mark always answered his phone and was quick to address any concerns. He used quality materials and professional craftsman. His carpenter John and his roofer Rodney showed great pride in their work. The end result was exactly what I asked them to build and we have received many compliments from our neighbors."

Offers commercial services

"We had Peninsula Development Corp. install a 20-foot beam in our home, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. From start to finish, the team was professional, efficient, and clearly very knowledgeable about the work being done. The project was completed in just a day and a half, which exceeded our expectations for a job of this size. Frank was great to work with and took the time to walk us through options to make sure we stayed within our budget without sacrificing quality or safety. The crew worked efficiently, kept the job site organized, and delivered excellent results. We would absolutely recommend Peninsula Development Corp. to anyone looking for a reliable, skilled contractor for structural work."

Customers say: Quick response

"I have used Poquoson Specialty for personal projects as well as commercial projects for my work and have never had the first negative issue arise. They have always been extremely helpful and knowledgeable when value engineering was needed. I found Kevin Stroop to be open and honest and I have come to trust his judgment. I have never once was I unhappy with the results of a Poquoson Specialty project. I could not say this about any other contractor I've worked with through the years."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

A cross brace for a fence gate should stretch from the top corner of the gate’s hinge side to the bottom corner of its latch side at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of the gate. This positioning distributes the bulk of the gate’s weight to the base of the post, taking pressure off the top hinge.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Most load-bearing walls are exterior, though they can also be interior.

Traditionally, bungalows are single-story homes, although having a half or partial story on top of the first floor is common. While adding a second story to a bungalow is certainly possible, the home would no longer be considered a bungalow by the strictest definition.
