"I worked with Matt, and was able to get an appointment set up to happen within a few days at a competitive rate. He inspected and cleaned the chimney well, and also noticed breaks in the fireplace/chimney that would possibly lead to severe damage if they weren't repaired before use -- even going so far as to recommend how I could fix it myself, or offering to do it separately if I wanted someone else to. He was skilled, polite, and cared about doing a good/thorough job even beyond the description of what he came to do. I really appreciate his help and they'll be my first phone call next time I need similar work done. Thanks!"

"We are very satisfied with Shamrock. When we requested an estimate for our projects, they quickly provided a clear, reasonable quote, and all our questions were answered. After we accepted the proposal, they showed up next week and completed the work. Everything we needed was done very well. Highly recommended."

"Update to my previous review. After contacting Joseph with Around The Clock he promptly came to my home, fixed the settings on my unit and is coming back to clean my fireplace free of charge. He is also personally ordering me a new factory remote as I requested. Thank you, Joseph, for making things right, would do business with Joseph again."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Because VA experiences high humidity and heavy rainfall, prioritize moisture-resistant materials for your fireplace service. Choose stainless steel flue liners, which resist corrosion much better than traditional clay tiles. Use refractory mortar for firebox repairs to withstand high heat and moisture. Apply vapor-permeable waterproofing sealants to protect your masonry. Finally, install stainless steel or copper flashing at the roofline to prevent wind-driven rain from entering your home.

Helpful?

To prepare for gas log service, keep moisture-detection and corrosion-inspection materials on hand, as Williamsburg experiences high humidity that accelerates oxidation on gas components. Maintain functional carbon monoxide detectors, which are required by VA law for homes with fuel-burning appliances. Keep a record of your system type — whether natural gas or propane — to ensure professionals bring the correct fittings for your setup.

Helpful?

Burning unseasoned wood is a major mistake that accelerates dangerous creosote buildup. Firewood requires twelve to twenty-four months to properly dry in the humid Williamsburg climate. Homeowners also skip annual inspections during mild winters, allowing hidden moisture damage and mortar deterioration to worsen. Avoid doing structural DIY repairs without permits, and never use standard Portland cement instead of refractory mortar. Always address storm damage and flashing failures immediately to prevent leaks.

Helpful?

Start by scheduling a Level 2 chimney inspection. This is the recognized standard of care in VA when purchasing a home. Have a professional check the integrity of older clay liners and assess the chimney cap for wildlife damage. Verify that any previous structural work received proper permits. Finally, book a professional chimney sweeping to clear out creosote buildup before you light your first fire in your new Williamsburg home.

Helpful?

Keep a wood moisture meter on hand to ensure your firewood remains below a twenty percent moisture level. This prevents heavy creosote buildup between your fireplace service appointments. Virginia law requires functioning carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, so test these devices regularly. Keep a strong flashlight and inspection mirror to check older clay liners for visible cracks. Finally, maintain a properly fitted chimney cap to keep out local wildlife and heavy rain.
