"I love my new black roof and gutters. Mateo was excellent. He explained the process in detail from start to finish and was always available to answer questions, he even filed the insurance claim for hail damage for me. Mateo made the roof replacement process simple. I highly recommend Mateo for your roofing needs."

"Discovered this co. from my wife's coworker who used them for her roof. They were/are OUTSTANDING. Pricing was 1/3 the cost of another contractor for the same shingles. Crew was on time, fast, and very professional. I will MOST CERTAINLY be using them again for near future projects."

"They showed up as expected and did a great job on the repair, which we needed done quickly. We also had scheduled a quote for the whole roof to be done while they were doing the repair. They contacted us a day or two later with a number we liked and a day or two later they were there doing a complete tear-off and re-roof. These guys did a fantastic job and were finished in one day and our yard never looked like anyone was there. George, you run a great business and your customer service is excellent. Thank you, we are very, very pleased and would recommend you to anyone!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Though cedar shakes often get confused with shingles, there are a few key differences between wood shakes and wood shingles. For one, cedar shingle prices are lower, although shingles are less durable than wood shakes. Cedar shakes are thicker than shingles (shingles range from about 3/8 to 1/2 inches thick, compared to 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick for shakes). Wood shakes are handmade, while shingles are usually machine-made. Also, wood shakes work better on steeper roofs than shingles do. While the cost of cedar shingles is more budget-friendly, there are many great reasons to choose shakes.

In some cases, yes, you can put a second roof layer over architectural shingles, but it depends on your home’s structural stability and the local building codes where you live. Architectural shingles are thicker and heavier than standard asphalt shingles, so you may need structural reinforcement or a structural engineer’s inspection before proceeding. Additionally, some building departments don’t allow for two roof layers, regardless of the roof type. You should ask a professional if ripping the old roof off before installing the new one is the best option for you.

Yes, shingles should overhang the drip edge, typically between 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch. An overhang shorter than 1/2-inch can allow wind-driven rain to get under the shingles and damage the roof deck or fascia. Conversely, an overhang longer than 3/4-inch increases the risk of shingles getting caught by strong winds, which can lead to roof uplift. Always check your local building code for exact overhang requirements in your area.

Roofing felt is the most common type of roof underlayment, likely because it has been around the longest. It’s called roofing felt because it is often made of felt soaked in asphalt. Depending on the type of roofing a home has, roofing felt comes in different thicknesses.

If properly installed and maintained, roofing felt should last between 10 and 25 years.

There should be small gaps between your roof and the walls of your home, and other buildings. These small gaps let building materials shift, expand, and contract with weather and other outside forces, and they prevent moisture from wicking down walls from roofing and gutter systems. Without these strategic gaps, your home’s exterior and its finishes can sustain water damage, decay, peel, delaminate, and crack. However, there is a fine line between a smart gap and a problematic gap—all  gaps should be small, intentional, and covered or filled in with foam insulation to prevent pests from using them as access points.
