"James came out to price install of a box to plug in my portable generator. After we started talking and me asking questions James was able to give me an outstanding price on a whole house Generac generator with panel upgrade and included a whole house surge protector. They ran into additional costs with running the gas line but James kept to his word and honored the original price! The crew were professional and proficient in their work! Marcie was outstanding with communication and explaining any questions I had! I would definitely recommend this company and would use J&M for any future electrical needs!"

"I have been hiring Cody Malone since we purchased our house in July 2012. They have switched out outlets, installed indoor ceiling fans, installed outdoor ceiling fans, ran electrical to my outdoor water feature and switched out my light fixtures. I plan to hire them again when I add electric to my detached garage. They always do a great job and arrive when they say they will. I have never had a single issue and they have been to my house for no less than six different projects!"

"I was very impressed with their two electricians Joe and Paul from the moment they walked in. They were COVID19 compliant with mask, ready to work. They were very attentive to my request. They were an amazing two man team that worked fast and efficiently. I was impressed in the manner that they came up with a plan to execute the work in a safe manner with no damage to fixture or property. They cleaned after their work was complete. As retired Disabled veteran, I can honestly put my stamp of approval on Electric Solutions of Richmond and their electricians Joe and Paul as well. Prices were fair and affordable. They will be my go to company and electricians. Highly Recommended. - Jimmy"

"We had permanent outdoor lighting installed around our roofline for the holidays. The work was quick, professional, and reasonably priced. Jonathan brought good ideas about how to make it happen. Would definitely recommend!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, GFCI breakers are required for all outdoor outlets. This code requirement applies to all outlets located on balconies, decks, patios, and other outdoor lounge spaces. In addition, outdoor outlets need to have watertight covers that provide protection when cords are plugged in. If you have an older home that may not be up to code, it's a good idea to also ask your electrician about adding GFCIs to some indoor areas. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and any other areas of a home that are commonly exposed to moisture should have GCFI breakers.

The life expectancy of a circuit breaker is 30 to 40 years. However, how long your circuit breaker lasts depends on the condition of your electrical equipment, the amperage, your electrical consumption, and more. A breaker box that frequently trips from overload will last much shorter than a breaker box with the proper amperage for the number of devices and appliances in use. If your circuit breaker trips frequently, and you have also increased your electrical consumption, it may be worth upgrading your electrical panel to extend your electrical system’s lifespan—and save you the hassle of frequent power trips.

Any light bulbs made from toxic materials, such as CFL bulbs and fluorescent light tubes, should not be thrown in the garbage. These bulbs need to be sent to hazardous waste collection sites run by your municipality or sent through a specialized mail-back recycling program. Earth911 allows you to search and find a recycling location near you.

Rewiring an electric system in a house typically ranges between $2,000 and $9,000, but a simple project can cost as low as $1,500. More complex upgrades run $10,000 or higher. The price depends on the size of your home, how accessible the wiring is, the cost of materials, and local electrician fees.

You can add an electrical outlet outside by sending a wire through the wall from an existing interior outlet. Without having to open up walls, you can thread a new electrical cable from the existing outlet through the wall and to the exterior. You’ll need to cut a hole in the siding to place your new outlet. Ensure that your outdoor outlet is a GFCI outlet (ground fault circuit interrupter outlet) per the National Electrical Code. It’s best to hire an electrician to add an outdoor outlet unless you have previous electrical experience.
