Small jobs welcome

"Billy gave me an estimate and brochures of all the extras I might want to ensure a very quality roof that will hold up in storms. No high-pressure sales whatsoever. Their estimate was fair and reasonable. I look forward to hiring this company in a few months. It is very refreshingly as a homeowner to find honest pros."

"HCR did a great job with replacing our roof. The materials are high quality and the work (removing original roof, laying down new roof and cleaning up) was done efficiently and with great detail. HCR also offers an excellent warranty and was very thorough in explaining options and setting up the work. We would highly recommend!"

"Wow! Alden came the same day. He understood exactly what needed to be done and did it for a very reasonable charge. He did not try to sell me roofing services I did not need. I found out he has been in the business since he was 10 years old. Basically he is a genuine expert you can trust."

"They showed up as expected and did a great job on the repair, which we needed done quickly. We also had scheduled a quote for the whole roof to be done while they were doing the repair. They contacted us a day or two later with a number we liked and a day or two later they were there doing a complete tear-off and re-roof. These guys did a fantastic job and were finished in one day and our yard never looked like anyone was there. George, you run a great business and your customer service is excellent. Thank you, we are very, very pleased and would recommend you to anyone!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Yes, in many cases, homeowners insurance does cover roof damage caused by snow. For instance, if your roof collapses during a snowstorm or an ice dam results in a ceiling leak, your policy should cover repair costs. However, for a claim to be approved, the roof must have been well-maintained and in good condition before the snow-related damage occurred. The payout, whether full or partial, can also vary depending on the age of your roof and its overall condition prior to the snowfall. It is always best to review your specific homeowners insurance policy to understand the details of your coverage and any potential exclusions.

A cool roof can be worth it in the right climate. Cool roofs are excellent at reflecting solar heat away from your home, so if you live in a warm or hot climate, they can be a great roofing choice. Some cool roofing materials are even eligible for tax credits. However, they cost more than traditional roofing and don’t retain heat as well as traditional roofing, so they’re not ideal if you live in a cold climate.

No, there’s no specific building code that requires a roof overhang. However, installing your roof with the standard 2-inch overhang is good practice, as it helps direct runoff away from your fascia boards and roof decking and into your gutters. Some overhang is especially important in areas that see heavy rainfall and snowfall, as the risk of water getting under the roofing material and causing water damage is much higher.

Many insurance policies will not cover a roof with two layers of shingles. An additional layer of shingles increases the risk of various kinds of damage, and insurers typically won’t pay claims on a roof with an overlay. Adding a layer of shingles may even jeopardize your insurance coverage entirely, so check your policy to ensure you stay within coverage guidelines.

Roofing estimates vary for many reasons, but the most significant ones include differences in the cost of labor based on the contractor’s experience and overhead costs, as well as the quality of the materials your roofer will use for the job. You should get your estimates itemized and make sure your contractors include details about the materials they plan on using. Doing so allows you to compare not only based on the cost but also the value that you’ll get for your money.
