"It is difficult to find the adequate words to describe my experience with Mighty Dad. Sp very beyond wonderful. A superhero that swooped in and absolutely Saved the Day. My previous “contractor” had lied and deceived and taken full advantage of my naivety (and ultimately absconded with close to $20,000.00), leaving me with an unfinished shell. After taking a few months to lick my wounds and find funds to finish the project, Jeff Phillips gave me a very reasonable quote to complete the addition. Once he began the work, there were many (many, many) problems with the structure that had been constructed to not meet state and city codes. Jeff worked with me on these and put things right. His installation of the insulation, drywall and all finishing touches was superb – he’s a real craftsman. And all along the way he would explain what was needed, offer solutions and get my input before moving forward. He also had some great ideas for the interior design aspects for tile, flooring and trim work concerns. His work is meticulous and he ensures that everything is done completely right. He never cuts corners. I am so pleased with the results!! It was a long road getting here, but I am now one happy homeowner. You can’t go wrong if you decided to go with Mighty Dad. Someone should sew a big MD on his shirtfront! I’m very lucky that he landed in my life."

"Very good! Chris called me almost immediately after I registered on Angie's List. I had already been told by my regular HVAC service tech that a replacement unit would cost about $7000 if paid in cash or offered me a financing/service contract for 10 years at $140+ a month!! Come on guys! Chris with B&B came by the next day (Monday), we talked and he offered to replace my current Goodman units with slightly better rated ones for $4500 and would do it the next day! He and his assistance were done in under the 3 hours the next day that Chris said it would take. Very happy with the products and the services so far!! He even honored the $100 coupon that was on your site."

"When we decided to redo our kitchen in April of 2012, we knew what we wanted fixed, our budget and that's about it. We started talking to contractors, kitchen design centers and researching ideas. We quickly realized we were in WAY over our heads. A lot of places offer free design services if you buy all of your materials through them. We didn't want to be tied down. We didn't want a complete tear down to the studs, either. Homemade Design to the rescue! First of all the price was an absolute steal for the service provided. Amanda and co. Listened to what we wanted and came up with inovative, functional and beautiful solutions. Our house is old. We wanted to keep that 1920s feel, but still have a dishwasher, granite countertops and stainless appliances! Amanda had the brilliant idea of only replacing the bottom cabinets. She also gave me excellent instructions on how to refinish my existing cabinets so they look like new. This was a perfect solution for US. Homemade Design gave us ideas for layout, cabinets, lighting, wall paint, appliances, furniture, countertops, backsplash, faucets, sink, and cusions for built in. She would have recommended flooring if we wanted, but we didn't. Now, Amanda is more like a consultant...( I actually called her my kitchen remodel therapist). You still are ultimately responsible for the plan and what works for you. If your measurements are off (like mine were) that's on you. I was adament about no island and no microwave over the stove and so she didn't put those in the design. Some suggestions were not my style. And I said so. Honestly, if I picked out my own kitchen it would be so safe: white subway tile or something. Amanda gave me the guts to mix patterns and create something spectacular! It took almost a year to complete ( contractors fault) We did a lot of work ourselves. We bought the cabinets, backsplash tile, light fixtures, table and banquette cusions through Homemade Design at a great discount, we checked!! If you try shopping for any part of your kitchen, the volume of choices can be overwhelming. We loved having Amanda narrow it down for us. Communication was through email, mostly. She never took longer than three business days to respond to my million questions or concerns. Awesome. 5 months later, my kitchen is a dream come true. And I owe it all to Homemade Design!

"Once I sent her all the measurements, it took her a little while to get the options back to me.  Overall, they're good designs.  However, they're very simplistic and give general ideas for space planning.  I was hoping to have a better idea for sizes of furniture for the space and some variations on staging.
Jill was very responsive when I did have a question.  I'm not sure how helpful it is to have a virtual design done.  If we lived in similar cities, I'd probably use her again for help with additional designs.

"It took a few days to get them here for estimate and suggestions for replacement of my roof. Then weather delayed starting date several times. Once they were able to start the crew of 4 went right to work. I have a 100-year old house and understandably there was rotted wood in areas which needed replacement even before the new roof could be installed. It took a total of 2-1/2 days to complete the job. I am very pleased with the new roof. My house looks wonderful. The owner kept me up to date on the progress of the job and any problems noted by the workers which needed repair. They took care of it all. They used quality shingles and hand nail all shingles, which is a better installation method than nail guns used by other contractors. This method is best for holding up to wind damage, and my house seems to be prone to heavy wind damage each year. I feel I can know my new roof will hold up against the heavy winds we experience here in the Roanoke valley. The price was a bit high but worth it for the quality of service and materials.

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

Balcony construction or replacement typically requires a building permit from your local permitting authority. Safety and building integrity are the main reasons for the need to obtain a permit and the subsequent inspections. In some cases, especially cantilevered balconies, your municipality may also require the oversight and signature of a structural engineer.

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.
