"Tommy B was efficient and courteous. I knew who to expect since I got the name and a photo of the plumber in a text. He covered his shoes upon entering the home. He gave the price for parts and labor upfront. He replaced my old sump pump with a new Zoeller Sump pump. As he was working he patiently answered my questions. He cleaned the work area thoroughly. Excellent job."

"Well trained electrician arrived on time, offered a fair price, and installed a dedicated outlet for our new sump pump right on the spot. Haven't had the final inspection from the County yet, but the work looks very professional."

"I emailed PNH Maintenance and Repair on a Sunday morning, within an hour of sending the message, I got a follow-up phone call. The caller asked me several questions about my situation and then said he could come over with a couple of hours to diagnose the problem further. Phil arrived sooner than I expected and within 15 minutes of arriving checked the power supply, the cut off and on switch, the pressure tank and arrived at the speedy conclusion that the pump (which was 30 years old) needed replacing. Since we could get some water, we did not need immediate emergency service but Phil offered to replace the pump the following afternoon. He gave me a ballpark price as well. Which turned out to be very close to the final process. True to his word, he and Nathan came the following afternoon. The process was speedy and the crew took great care to ensure the work area was clean when finished and the water was on. They did a fantastic job and took extra time to explain everything along the way. I cannot say enough good about these guys. I would hire PNH Maintenance and Repair again in a heartbeat. You cannot go wrong with these guys! Phil and Nathan are awesome. Will S."

"We had a leak somewhere in our bathroom that was causing water to drip from the dining room ceiling when the shower was used. Jacob found the problem quickly and replaced the rotted gasket. We also had him replace the tub spout and shower head since he was here. Additionally, we discovered the night before our appointment that one of our sump pumps appeared to be broken. Jacob replaced it with one from his truck. All in all, the service was OUTSTANDING! He took the time to explain everything and demonstrate that the issues were resolved. Pricing was reasonable and service was quick, professional and personable. Cannot rate Pipe Doctor highly enough! Definitely recommend!"

Wells and Pumps questions, answered by experts

For the most part, choosing between 30/50 psi and 40/60 psi is based on your water-pressure preference. However, it can also depend a little bit on your house—if you have older plumbing, a lower water pressure can be easier on the pipes (and a bit more gentle on your well pump).

The lower 30/50 pressure is usually enough for a single-story home, but you may want 40/60 if you have multiple stories, as the extra pressure helps water flow smoothly up to the second floor.

Well pumps need power to run, so they can’t function without electricity. If your power shuts off, there can sometimes be enough pressure in the water tank to allow for a lucky flush or a bit of tap water—but this won’t last long. It’s a good idea to have a backup generator or an alternative power source like solar if you’re worried about losing power.

If you have a small well or a particularly high water demand, it’s possible to overuse your well. How quickly a well replenishes depends on its water source. In this case, you may want to purchase a water storage tank that you can fill from the well in off-hours, or if you’re planning to build a new well and you expect a large water demand, you may want to build a deeper well to match your needs.

Common signs that your well pump is failing include fluctuating or consistently poor water pressure, sputtering water from faucets, or a complete loss of water. Other indicators are unusual noises coming from the pump, the pump running continuously, dirty or cloudy water, or a sudden, unexplained spike in your utility bills. While some issues, especially after a power outage, might be resolved by simply restarting the power or priming the pump, persistent problems suggest a more serious issue. If you notice any of these red flags, it is recommended to call a professional well pump service to inspect the system and determine whether it needs to be repaired or replaced.

Signs that your well is dry include a decrease in water pressure, strange odors coming from faucets, cloudy, bubbly, or discolored water, and water that’s warmer than normal. Signs that your well pump is bad are similar, but you may also notice higher-than-average electric bills, strange clicking sounds, and faucets that spit or sputter.
