"Jose and his team of professionals did an excellent job making our home's exterior look brand-new, clean and beautiful. Jose gave us a great price to power wash our entire home's exterior. We had never had it cleaned before, so it really was a big job. Jose and his team did it quickly and expertly. Our home is brick with siding and two brick chimneys. We will definitely be hiring Jose's team to power wash and repair our two story deck. I highly recommend them! :-) :-)"

Pressure Washing questions, answered by experts

You should avoid using a pressure washer on any surface or item that could be damaged by the high-pressure spray, as some materials are too delicate to withstand the force.

Key items and surfaces to avoid include:

  • Electrical Components: Never pressure wash electrical systems, as water can cause short-circuits and create a safety hazard. This includes utility meters, breaker boxes, electrical outlets, generators, and HVAC or air conditioner units.

  • Delicate and Fragile Materials: Fragile items can crack, shatter, or be stripped by the pressure. Avoid pressure washing windows, glass, light fixtures, shingled roofs (especially asphalt), and stucco.

  • Painted, Stained, or Sealed Surfaces: Unless your goal is to strip the finish, do not pressure wash painted surfaces, stained wood (like decks), or anything with a protective seal that could be stripped away. Be especially cautious with older surfaces that may contain lead paint.

  • Soft Woods and Certain Decking: Delicate surfaces like softwood, composite decking, and antique or wooden patio furniture can be etched or damaged. If you must wash wood, use a lower-powered pressure washer with a wide-angle nozzle to prevent damage.

  • Living Things: Never use a pressure washer on people, pets, or plants. The force can cause serious injury and will destroy landscaping.

Pressure washing shou sugi ban siding is generally not a good idea. The charring process used in creating shou sugi ban siding involves burning the wood's surface to achieve its unique appearance and enhanced durability. The charred surface is delicate, and pressure washing can easily damage it. Instead of pressure washing, you can clean it with a soft brush or broom to remove loose debris, followed by a mixture of mild soap and water applied with a soft cloth or sponge.

The answer to how often you should pressure wash your house is the same no matter whether your siding is wood, metal, or vinyl. Plan to do a project like this once a year with occasional hand cleanings in between to remove unexpected dirt—like debris from an especially violent storm or droppings from birds flying overhead.

Depending on the amount of experience you have with power washing or pressure washing, hiring a professional is likely a better option. Using a pressure washer requires a bit of know-how to avoid damaging siding, trim, roofing shingles, and even the seals on your windows. Holding the pressure washer too close to the material you’re cleaning can cause damage to the surface. You can wash your home’s exteriors with a garden hose, but high-pressure cleaning should be done by professionals.

You should wait until your pavers have completely dried and cured before pressure washing them. Wait at least three to five days, though some sealants may need up to an entire week. Rushing that timeline can mess with the finish, weaken the seal, or leave streaks that are tough to fix. Once the sealant has fully set, stick to a gentle approach. Keep the pressure under 1,500 PSI and hold the nozzle at least two feet from the surface. Anything stronger or closer can blast the joint sand loose or wear down the sealant you just applied.
