"Matt and Brett are amazing to work with. They definitely know their stuff. I had some items that needed to be repaired for a home sale per the home inspection. I really appreciated that everything was explained to me, including pictures of all affected areas. Other companies just wanted to replace the whole fireplace which would have cost 6,000 dollars. Matt came up with a plan of what needed to be replaced and what could be repaired or resurfaced. Brett did the dryer vent cleaning and I went from taking 2 hours to dry clothes to 30 minutes. Amazing customer service. Extremely prompt too with appointments and responding to messages. I have already hired them again for my new house."

"Great work at a fair price!  Ryan cleaned/inspected the chimney in my recently-purchased older (70 years) house, and was very careful to protect the rug and furniture near the fireplace.  The chimney really needed to be cleaned badly, and due to some of the things he found (birds, squirrel), he inspected further and found that the topper for my chimney is the wrong size and does not offer any deterrent (screen) to keep small animals out of the chimney.  He was able to replace the topper that day, and also showed me photos of the top of the chimney, pointing out that previous repairs were done in such a manner as to cause possible water problems in the future.  Ryan will return next week to re-cap the top of the chimney as well as the three shoulders.  He also cleaned the dryer vent, but since I have such a short dryer vent, and it was already fairly clean, he was kind enough to reduce the price on the dryer vent cleaning.  Ryan was friendly, punctual, fair with his pricing, and does great work!  Definitely an addition to my "dream team" of go-to companies for help with the house!  Highly recommended!

"They were late and they called me 5 minutes before our scheduled appointment to tell me they would be there in thirty minutes. They gave me a quote to replace my fireplace unit and then told me it would be extra because my roof is unsafe. We have had many people up there, including a roofer, and no one has said that."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

You should never block both the top and bottom of your chimney. Proper airflow is essential because the temperature inside the chimney will still fluctuate as your house warms and cools. Moisture can build up without ventilation, leading to dampness in your walls over time. Blocking the top prevents debris and animals from entering, but the chimney still needs air circulation to avoid condensation issues. Allowing the chimney to breathe maintains the health of your home and prevents long-term damage.

There are a few things you can look out for to ensure your chimney is safe to use. Check for the following issues:

  • Cracks or missing pieces in the masonry of the chimney

  • Creosote buildup in the chimney, which is a black, tar-like substance

  • Cracks, stains, or scorch marks in the firebox

  • Water stains in or around the fireplace

  • A broken or stuck damper

Neglecting to clean your chimney can lead to serious safety hazards. A primary risk is the buildup of creosote, a highly flammable substance that can ignite and cause a dangerous chimney fire. This buildup can also create blockages in the flue, resulting in poor venting of smoke, soot, and toxic gases like carbon monoxide, which can then enter your home and create dangerously poor indoor air quality. Additionally, creosote is acidic and can damage the chimney's mortar and metal components over time, potentially allowing smoke to leak into your house. To prevent these issues, it is essential to schedule an annual chimney cleaning with a professional.

You can safely build a fire pit on your patio as long as you use porous, fire-resistant pavers or a fire pit mat over existing pavers. Otherwise, you’ll need to have exposed ground beneath your pit. You’ll also need to make sure the location for the fire pit is far enough away from your house and any other nearby structures.

While you have some flexibility in the types of wood you can use in your outdoor furnace, it's important to make wise choices for optimal performance and efficiency. Hardwoods, such as oak, maple, and cherry, are generally recommended for their higher energy content and cleaner burn. These hardwoods produce more heat per volume and tend to produce fewer creosote deposits, which can accumulate and cause a chimney fire, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
