"The team did a great job and showed fantastic attention to detail. My fencing project was large and covered difficult terrain. They still made it look better than fences a different (very large) contractor installed on flat terrain on nearby properties. I recommend 5 Star Fence to anyone who values quality workmanship."

Customers say: Quick response

"Very prompt addressing tree down over driveway in early morning emergency on a holiday. This is a huge win! Let's be honest, service in Charlottesville is not great. MC landscaping is stepping it up. Highly recommend but get in line behind my additional work needs."

"I had a really small job and they were so happy to help me out. Did an excellent job with precision work building two custom sized gates and curb appeal appearance for my old tired fence. Will use them again when it is time to rebuild the whole fence."

"Smaller operation towo or three, but was quick to contact me gave me good price and repaired fence promptly. I had him do two railed fences at my apartment complex after fence repair. I have him preparing quote to redo garage interior, his verbal quote was very reasonable and If written quote is about the same as verbal I will use him for that. Would highly recommend."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

If you hire a fence installer for the project, the time it takes to build a fence is about 20 to 30 hours. Tackling the project yourself will take around 40 to 50 hours. It can take longer if you need to obtain permits, level the ground, remove the old fence, or remove a tree.

On most untreated wood fences, there is no need to sand before treating. You typically only need to sand if there’s an old coat of paint or stain on your fence. If you do need to sand off a previous paint or protective coating (like an old stain or sealant), use medium-grit sandpaper.

The most common hog wire gauge for a fence is 12.5. However, you can choose from a few gauges based on your needs. While 12.5 is a reliable gauge for penning in large, strong animals, 9 gauge is a better option of you have large animals that are easily spooked, such as horses. For smaller animals, like dogs or pigs, you can use a 16 gauge hog wire.

All fences offer some degree of privacy, but standard perimeter fences may not be designed with that in mind. Dedicated privacy fences, however, tend to enclose smaller areas and feature more high-end materials that truly emphasize seclusion and comfort. Additionally, privacy fences typically offer fewer gaps to peek in through than standard fences, though you can likely adjust that to suit your preferences.

In most cases, you will need a building permit to put up a vinyl fence, especially if the fence is sitting on or close to your property line. You can ask your local building department or  fence installation company if your fence project will require a permit. If so, you can expect it to cost between $20 and $60. Your fence installer should pull the permit for you. Building without a permit could eventually require you to pay again to remove the fence and reinstall it after getting the job approved.
