"Thanks to Deck Envy, we have the most gorgeous deck! We met with many contractors but chose Deck Envy for multiple reasons. We really liked that they were a small business and provided a very personalized approach to the entire project. Communication was great. Johnny and Ricardo explained every step of the process and were very patient with questions. We had a specific vision of what we wanted, and they went above and beyond our expectations. The crew that came every day did an amazing job. The attention to detail, craftsmanship and resulting quality of our finished deck is absolutely stunning. The price was also very reasonable. One other thing to note – during the project they had to dig up our stone patio under the deck to replace one of the deck support beams. After the deck was done, they sent a contractor to repair the patio. You would NEVER know that they ever dug a hole there! The patio looks perfect! I highly recommend Deck Envy for any deck or patio project!!"

"We had a new full-deck installed in July 2016 and were very pleased with the high quality of work and professional service. I called several contractors for price quotes and was impressed by the quick response of Atlantic Deck for an initial visit and assessment, providing a written quote at the end of the first visit, and the email communication with our project manager, Arran Collins. After receiving the platt for our townhouse property boundary, which was needed to verify the distance needed for the outward extension of our back fence, Arran took care of application paperwork for permits from Fairfax County, and emailed me to communicate when the electrician was available to install a new outside outlet and the demolition of the old half-deck would begin. The supervisor of the day laborers worked tirelessly in the heat and humidity of mid-July, and did an outstanding job of removing the old half-deck quickly, setting up the concrete pillars, and constructing the new deck. Overall, it was worth the $8,000 I paid for the entire project because of the clear email communication and professionalism of this organization. Based on the quality of work, I would strongly recommend Atlantic Deck to others. Although you might save up to 25% of the total cost if you negotiate directly with a supervisor of day laborers, you really need to know what you are doing, or trust the person (unless you are willing to take the risk of poor quality work). We liked them so much that I paid $650 to have a “deck-staining” contract with a sub-contractor recommended by Arran in September 2016. He did a great job as well."

"We recently had Exterior Works remove our old wooden deck and replace it with a slightly larger Trex deck. Arafat Shadid, the company owner, and his team did an excellent job for us. They showed up when they said they would, worked very diligently over the course of a week and finished when they said they would. All required county permits were pulled and they helped with our HOA paperwork by ensuring we had the correct County plat document. They were the best price of the three estimates we received and actually finished the job for slightly less than their estimate. Arafat ensured we discussed exactly how we wanted the deck to look and was always available if I had a question. I would definitely consider hiring them if you need a new deck."

"Kurt was easy to reach via email or telephone. Apprised us of his approach to stripping our deck of its horrible paint coating and was upfront of the general cost during his first visit. He did need to be reminded to provide a specific contract upfront. Otherwise, deck restoration work progressed quickly once weather conditions permitted start and Kurt finished the large project within a few days."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

Typically, most residential wooden decks are designed to support approximately 40 pounds per square foot, including the deck’s weight and any items placed on it. While this is fine for typical use, it is usually not enough to hold the weight of a hot tub filled with water and people. To safely support a hot tub, your wood deck will likely require reinforcement. Therefore, it’s best to have a contractor or a structural engineer assess it before hot tub installation.

Yes, it’s definitely possible to build a pergola on an existing deck. All you need to do is attach the pergola support beams to the deck’s joists and build up from there. Beware that mistakes can damage your deck, so if you’re at all unsure of the process, play it safe and hire a pro for your custom build.

No. In most cases, it’s not colder or freezing temperatures that affect decking materials but the amount of moisture that seeps into the materials as a result. For example, wood decking material is more likely to suffer from rot or decay when exposed to excess moisture from snow or ice. An extreme change in temperature can cause wood to expand or contract, but only if it’s not properly treated beforehand.
