"I originally had a serviceman from Wooldridge Heating, Air, and Electric to evaluate our noisy, wobbling ceiling fan. It took a 12 ft. step ladder to reach, which I'm not able to do myself, anymore. Once it was determined that the motor was going bad in the fan, I asked them to return and replace it with a new one we bought. They two workers sent were prompt, polite, and very efficient. They had the old fan down and the new one in place in less than an hour. That included transferring a remote control receiver into the new fan canopy. They even took away the old defective fan. Very good service and at a very reasonable cost."

"WB Lightning Rods did an excellent job installing lightening rods on our home. The owner stayed onsite the entire time to supervise the work. He took extra care to plan the rod and cable placement to ensure the proper protection and retain the aesthetics of our home. His crew were knowledgeable, polite, neat and efficient. We could not be more pleased with the results."

"I would like to recommend Joshua Smith as a Tesla installer and overall electrician. He did a great job for my wife and I on the installation of our powerwall 3 and car chargers within our garages as well as trouble shooting some other electrical problems at our new home at Smith Mountain Lake. Additionally, he answers phone calls and shows up on time. Again, we highly recommend Joshua."

"Mike and James were professional and friendly electricians who showed what quality affordable electrical services looks like. Their work is beyond reproach and their friendly professionalism and integrity are welcome standard-setting changes from what I've grown accustomed to over the years from similar service providers. They demonstrated superior attention to detail and showed themselves to be conscientious workmen and that is a rare and priceless commodity these days. Central Virginia Electrical Services is now my go-to company for all things electrical. I couldn't have asked for a better experience- and at such an affordable cost! Thank you Mike and James. You guys ROCK!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

You should never use a plug with burn marks because it can cause a fire or even an electrical shock. The burn marks could be caused by a dangerous underlying electrical problem, so it’s important to call a qualified electrician right away.

According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), GFCI outlets should be installed in wet or damp locations where they might be splashed with water or other liquids. This is to protect against ground faults, which are more common around water. Specific areas that require GFCI outlets include kitchens (especially near counters), bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, garages, and all outdoor receptacles. Depending on local electrical codes, you may need at least one GFCI outlet in these rooms, or every outlet in the area may need to be GFCI protected.

Smoke detectors come in two different options: hardwired or battery-operated. While hardwired units are attached directly to the home’s electrical system, a battery-operated smoke detector only needs a simple battery for operation and can be placed virtually anywhere in your home. Some homeowners may mistakenly think their battery-operated units are hardwired in because all their units are interconnected, but many battery-operated units can operate within a smoke alarm network in your home.

Yes, you can use a dimmer switch with an LED fixture, but it must be a dimmer that is compatible with LEDs. Check the manufacturer’s information to ensure the dimmer works with LEDs, as not all dimmers are compatible with them. Many smart light switches accept LEDs, but be sure to read the details on the packaging.

Yes, blue wires can be hot wires in the U.S. However, they are less common in residential properties than red and black hot wires. Blue wires are typically used as traveler wires in three-way and four-way switches, as well as ceiling fans. They allow fixtures to be controlled by multiple switches, like when there are switches at the top and bottom of a staircase for the same light.
