"David and his team were very professional and the work they did was excellent---we could tell the difference the next day. The temperature on the 2nd floor is several degree lower than before due to the new insulation and feels much more comfortable. David has solid knowledge regarding insulation and he explains things clearly. Definitely would recommend David and Prudent Homes to my friends and neighbors."

"I've been trying to find an expert in insulation for months to come out and tell me out to properly insulate around a removed chimney and Comfenergy was the expert I needed. Even though the insulation part of the job was too small for Comfenergy (wasn't above their minimum quote value) they were happy to give me their expert advice and I appreciate the time spent as I now know what to ask the roofing contractor to do in order to insulate this correctly. Thanks!"

"After my call to Discount Energy Services, I knew who was coming and when to evaluate my attic insulation. The estimate was prepared on-site with pricing. The workers arrived and knew exactly what they were to accomplish, which they confirmed with me. They prepared the entire path with clean drop cloths and created a plastic drape around my attic stairs. The foreman was glad to explain any aspect of the procedure. My attic was upgraded to R-49 and the difference is notable."

"Technician Howard Shires exceeded my expectations, i.e., not only was my immediate need met, i.e., the roof leak was patched, Mr. Shires calmly walked me through an inspection of the roof inside (attic) and outside, pointing out the additional problems in need of repair, which were essentially masked by my attic insulation. In addition, the repair and inspection were documented with photographs. Lastly, based upon the trust inspired by Mr. Shires' skill and professionalism, I have scheduled a follow-up appointment to get a roof replacement bid. Note, my roof was old when I moved in 20 years ago, and today's inspection and pictures taken by Mr. Shires indicate additional leaks and some questionable patching done before I moved in."

"I think they did it all in one day. When we decided to go with them. We have one room that doesn't have a second story with recess lights. That room is fairly new, we put it in 6 years ago. He showed me pictures of stucco in there. All those lights were coming in through those recess lights, they were not properly caulked or insulated, so we were losing a lot of beautiful energy through those recess lights. He corrected that. He correct where some of the baffles were covered. He brought it up to high lighting. There was a giant antenna laying across the top of the attic in the main house doing absolutely nothing. They broke it up and removed it. I felt like they were my eyes and ears going up there, something I couldn't do and showed me things that were done incorrectly.  The original insulation was a bluff. It had been displaced. I actually had ceiling drywall in between the structure. They corrected it all. Even the ceiling access was properly insulated and closed. They are just very thorough. They helped us when they troubleshooted from the old company. The price seemed perfectly fair, they didn't try to sell you a cheap product with a cheap price. It seemed like a fair price in line with quality. That's all we really want."

"A 5 ' wide by 4' tall window was installed at front of house where there had not been a window before. When that was completed James Hardie plank siding was installed on the entire house. This included removal of vinyl siding installed by previous owner, removal of house wrap under the vinyl, and removal of the original vertical siding. Under that was insulation and the 2 x 4 studs. Insulation was replaced and any rotted wood 2 x 4's. The house was sheathed with plywood with Hardie wrap over that. Then the Hardie Plank horizontal siding was placed. It took 2 days to remove all the old sidings and sheath the house before the installation of the Hardie Plank which took about 3 and 1/2 days. Only hold up was weather. The previous color of the vinyl siding was a "canvas" color. Very nondescript. The James Hardie Plank color I chose is "Deep Ocean" with white trim. The house looks beautiful and feels so much more solid. The Hardie Plank has a 30 year warranty. The employees of Sunshine Contracting show a great deal of pride and care in their work and were responsive to any questions I had about the process."

"When Ted, the owner, came out to give us a free estimate, he went through all the options for insulation based on quality and price point. We settled on reflective insulation. The original estimate was for two-days' worth of labor to insulate the attic of our 2500 sq. ft. 1940s house. They did the work in one day, and the final bill came out to below the estimate! We are very happy with the results, and I would use them again. In particular, I really like working with their office manager, Nancy: she is sweet, responsive, and tries to accommodate your schedule, which is a huge plus for me."

"We had a horrendous situation with a basement floor installation that went wrong leaving our house full of fumes, and a week later we discovered our basement was contaminated by asbestos in the process.  When we called Bill and Contractors Unlimited, they were extremely responsive.  Although other companies gave us bids, Bill was able to work his schedule to fit us in weeks sooner than the others.  Although the cost was a bit more, that saved us money because we were displaced and could not even go into our house because of the fumes.  CU set up negative air machines to replace the air, they followed asbestos abatement laws, they cleaned every item that could be salvaged in our house.  They even saved more than we thought which really reduced our overall expense.  Bill and his team were extremely professional, friendly, helpful, and really went out of their way to ease our stress from this situation.  At the end of their process, Bill arranged for a air quality inspection which we happily passed - able to return home.  I would gladly recommend Contractors Unlimited for asbestos abatement.  I just wish we had called them before the floor guys  created such a disaster.  Thank you Bill!

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Insulating your ducts offers several benefits, including:

  • Improved energy efficiency: Duct insulation prevents energy losses, reducing heating and cooling costs.

  • Cost savings: Lower energy bills make insulation a cost-effective investment.

  • Environmental benefits: Enhanced efficiency reduces your carbon footprint.

  • Consistent comfort: Insulated ducts help maintain a stable indoor temperature.

  • Better indoor air quality: Reduced allergens and pollutants improve air quality.

A radiant barrier is a form of insulation topped with a reflective material designed to keep homes cool during hotter months. It is generally considered worth the investment if you live in a hot, sunny climate, as the cost can be recouped over time through lower energy bills. Installation costs typically range from $0.10 to $1 per square foot. After installation, homeowners in warm climates may save between $7 and $15 per month, potentially reducing their electric bill by 5% to 10%. The exact savings will vary depending on your location and the type of barrier chosen.

Mold can grow on garage ceiling insulation, which is why it’s important to install a vapor barrier behind the insulation and keep the space cooled and heated as you would your living area. Doing so will more or less eliminate the risk of mold growing on your garage ceiling insulation. You can also install a self-draining dehumidifier to help remove moisture, or opt for a foam board insulation or spray foam insulation that won’t harbor moisture and mold.

Yes, doggie doors, like all entrances, can let both hot and cold air into your home. However, as with any door in your house, you can take steps to weather-strip your pet's entrance to prevent air leaks.

You can insulate an existing garage door. But while it’s a cost-effective option upfront, it may not perform as well as a garage door that comes with insulation. If you live in a colder climate—or if you plan on working in your garage and need a new door—you should purchase one with existing insulation for better efficiency.
