"Quite well. Contractor was responsive, efficient, informative, and thorough. Replacement looks beautiful. Contractor cleaned site after completion of driveway; repaired lawn on each side of driveway. I am pleased with the results."

Customers say: True professional

"We have a slight hill at the end of our gravel driveway, which washed out pretty badly during the recent hurricane rains. I was looking for someone to repair this, and get us another year out of the gravel driveway before we have it paved. I called three different companies, and Bill Cooper was the one who gave me the best explanation of what needed to be done. He wasn't trying to push me towards an expensive new driveway, but rather gave me options to do it right. In the end, we covered the loose gravel with a milling base, which looks better and sets me up to pave the driveway in a year or so, when it has appropriately settled. I think Bill really knows his stuff, and I'm very happy with the way things turned out."

"I am thrilled with my new driveway and patio. John was so easy to work with and very accommodating to my needs and changes. I originally was just going to have my asphalt driveway replaced with a two stall concrete driveway but then decided to do my concrete patio at the same time. John came out to give the additional estimate and both were completed the following week. The prep work was done quickly and expertly. After the forms were laid on Friday I realized that I wanted my driveway to be wider to accommodate my motorcycle as well. John and his team were able to make this happen despite my last minute request. Would absolutely recommend this company!!!!"

"We got a handful of quotes for repairing our driveway, and because of how steep it is, everyone wanted an arm and a leg to even touch it. Everyone except for Daniel and American Custom. They jumped right in and redid our driveway and added some concrete steps in half the time they said they would need. And it completely changed the curb appeal of the house. It all looks amazing and any concrete work we get done while we live in Stafford will be done by American Custom Hardscapes!"

"Best sealant job we have had on our driveway to date. Applied a thick, even coat and was extremely careful with not overspraying our extensive amount of paver walls and stamp concrete walk ways that border the driveway. Very professional and courteous employees. A bit expensive, but some of that is because of the current high inflation and supply chain shortfalls we are facing. Strongly recommend any customer looking for a quality reseal of their driveway to get a free estimate. I will definitely use them on future reseals and repaving of our driveway, as required."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The answer to whether or not you need to get a permit before you start your driveway can vary widely based on local ordinances and the scope of your driveway ideas. In most urban and suburban areas, a permit is needed before building a new driveway to ensure that a homeowner is using safe materials and proper drainage practices while designing and constructing a new driveway. In some rural areas, a homeowner may not be required to apply for a permit. When building a new driveway on your own, always check with your local building department to see if you need to request a permit. When hiring a driveway contractor, verify that the right permits are being used before driveway construction begins.

Think of the street as a way to capture all the elements on either side of the road, including the road—a street encompasses the homes or other buildings, the trees, and the road of a given area as defined by the beginning and end of the street on a map. A roadway, however, is the component of the street where cars travel.

Even with regular maintenance, most driveways don’t last much longer than 30 years. Alligator cracking is a clear warning sign that your driveway’s foundation is failing, and cracks that are deep and wide can let water in, causing more damage. Standing water is another red flag. If your driveway doesn’t drain properly, it’s going to degrade slowly. Finally, if you’re seeing dips or uneven patches, that’s a sign the base layer or soil is shifting. If these issues pop up, it’s time to replace your driveway.

The material that’s best for your private road depends on your property, the climate in your area, and your personal preferences. Gravel is an affordable option, but some homeowners don’t like how it looks. It can be a pain to remove snow from, and it requires more ongoing maintenance than asphalt or concrete. However, while these other options require less maintenance and make snow removal a breeze, they’re more expensive and will need repairs from time to time. Ultimately, you’ll have to choose the road material that suits you and your property best.

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.
