"I had the roofs replaced and skylights on my 5 bedroom ranch house with attached garage and re-roof a detached gambrel roofed barn. Bevins also installed aluminum trim, vinyl soffit around the house and replaced all the gutters. All the jobs couldn't have gone better! All the crews were extremely polite and professional; their work exceeded my expectations. I would hire them again and highly recommend Bevins to others."

"Mike Lego and the guys from Atlantic are completely professional.  From their professional and accurate estimate, to their supply of numerous large samples, to showing up exactly when they said they would, to completing the job quickly and professionally. They were flexible enough to add a shed to the deal after they had already started.  They cleaned up after the first day, and then at the end of the job they completely cleaned the entire yard...not one nail or piece of shingle or tar paper was found any where.  They completely re-roofed the entire house, installed two brand-new skylights, replaced all the flashing, re-flashed the chimmeny, and moved a vent on the porch."

"KMA was very easy to work with (especially considering we're military and quite a distance away from our home), proactive, provided photos of all work that needed to be done as well as photos of the completed project. Lots of communication provided. Everything about this company from the first contact was very professional and Paul, the owner, was top-notch. I hope our skylights no longer leak, but I trust that KMA did a professional job."

"Roof inspection was done promptly and thoroughly. I was aware of a leaking skylight and desired particular attention to that area. Skylight was replaced later by a great team. Per the Big Deal, $100 off was applied to the replacement.

"The inspector was prompt and professional. He walked the roof and ensured seals around pipe collars, skylights, vents, etc.; resealed where indicated and repaired/sealed a few nail pops. Much to our surprise, 6 ridge vent shingles had blown off and were laying on the second-story roof. He also inspected the chimney and identified the need for an epoxy stabilizing sealant on the top of the chimney, which we have since scheduled. He even removed metal remnants of a previous owner's weather station as a courtesy.  Pictures were shown to me of the work areas repaired and those in need of repair. He did not check for interior leaks (which I now see was included in my deal) but I will have them do that when they come back to do the additional repairs. A carbon copy of the written report and additional repair recommendation/estimate were provide to me, and the estimate was reasonable and in line with competitors. "

"I hired area remodeling to install a new roof on my house. They tore off and installed a new roof in a day and a half!!! My roof is really big so I didn’t expect them to finish so soon. They went above and beyond with their work even painted my pipes on the roof to match the new shingles installed. After the shingles were installed the foreman and I walked around the house and to check for any trash or if anything got damaged, but I couldn’t find a single nail on the ground. They really did a great job!!! My neighbor just got his roof done a few weeks before mine and couldn’t believe mine was done in a day an a half!! His took almost week for the same size from another company. I’m posting this up a little late but I wanted to give the roof some time before I wrote a review to see if I had to call them back cause of a leaky roof. But after the terrible thunderstorms we had and the few tropic depressions that came through not a single shingle or a leak has happened!!! I will definitely use them for my next project that needs to happen at my house!!!"

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Ceiling costs depend on many factors, such as the material used and size, but coffered ceilings are considered one of the more expensive ceiling options. If you want to install a coffered ceiling but have a limited budget, consider using plywood instead of hardwood—it costs $2–$4.50 per square foot, while hardwood can be as much as $20 per square foot.

While it is possible to install a skylight as a DIY project, it is not recommended. Skylights are the most likely type of window to leak due to their position on the roof. Even minor mistakes during installation can lead to significant water damage and high repair costs. Additionally, working on a roof is dangerous, especially when maneuvering heavy, bulky windows. Due to the required roof modifications and the need for proper sealing and structural safety, hiring a professional skylight installer is strongly advised to avoid costly long-term issues.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Whether you need a permit to install a skylight depends on the scope of the project and local regulations. Generally, permits are required if the installation involves altering the structural components of your home, such as moving roof rafters. In some municipalities, a permit might also be necessary if the skylight protrudes above the highest point of your existing roof. However, if no structural changes are made, a permit may not be needed. The cost for a skylight installation permit is typically under $100. A convenient time to add a skylight is during a roof replacement, as your contractor can incorporate the new opening into the design.

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.
