"It went spectacularly well! Lori Parisi, the designer, met with us, listened to our needs, suggested certain closet organization configurations and gave us our choices for types of materials. She designed a plan which was in keeping with our needs and our pocketbook. The installer, Eric, came on time, worked conscientiously and efficiently and got it all done in a timely way with no problems. He cleaned up after his work, and was kind enough to cart away the old materials."

"JC Closets was quick to respond on my initial contact.  Javier came by to look at my closets, took measurements and asked for clarity on what I wanted.  He sent drawings and an estimate by email within a couple of days.  His quote was competitive and his reviews were favorable.  My husband and I are extremely satisified with the work which was completed on the agreed upon date.  The project was handled efficiently and professionally.

"We love our cabinets! They look fantastic while remaining affordable. The friendly staff at AWD helped us from start to finish. They are very knowledgeable and gave us advice and tips when needed. They were receptive and patient with our ever-changing needs. Once we finalized our purchase, we received our cabinets within two weeks! The cabinets are very sturdy and the color is beautiful. The hinges and hardware are high quality. We are extremely pleased with AWD and would recommend them to any friends or family looking for good cabinets at a fair price."

"They do an excellent job. They take care of my furniture and wrap everything up. They also take things apart and put them back together for me. They come on time and follow up with me.  I asked for the same guys the second time, because they did such a great job the first time. They also do storage and take care of my things.  There prices are competitive and they are very accommodating."

"We had a tree fall on our house during the June 29, 2012 Derecho, taking
our roof and side wall off the house -- catastrophic.  We have a great
insurance company -- USAA -- and we worked for many aspects of the
repair with a contractor they recommended.  But weren't satisfied with
their approach to the re installation of our hardwood floors and our
lower level carpeting.  On a hunch, I went on line and found a company,
Home Design Center & Flooring.  We were desperate to move in to be
home for Christmas, which meant that we needed new hardwood floors
throughout, and 160 square yards of carpeting... We called Home Design,
and LITERALLY 3 hours later the owner was in our home, expressing
compassion and concern, and leaving us with an estimate that was less
expensive than the original estimate, for much more service and
product.  Honestly, we were a little sceptical, but we took a chance
because we really liked the owner, and appreciated his swift
response,..  We went to spend Thanksgiving on Martha's Vineyard with our
kids. and came home to a miracle -- floors installed impeccably,
carpets laid beautifully, house ready for move in.  I can't stress
enough how much we felt like we were being served by "friends" -- hard
working, dedicated, talented, and top-notch professional friends- who
were determined to help us realize our ambitious objective of "home for
the holidays."  Top notch, artistic, committed to customer service, all
around outstanding one in a million contractor!

"The bathrooms look terrific. His people started when promised and worked on a Saturday to finish up the job. We were having a hard time picking a color to match an accent tile with a speckled pattern. The automatic color match device at the paint store wasn't coming up with the right color. One of the people working the job helped pick out the perfect color.

Closets questions, answered by experts

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

To prevent sagging, consider both the material and the span of the shelf. Using sturdy materials such as plywood or solid wood can provide better support than particleboard. Additionally, limiting the shelf span to 36 inches or less can reduce the risk of sagging. For longer shelves, incorporating center supports or brackets can offer additional reinforcement.

Whether it’s less expensive to build or buy a closet depends on both the type of closet and whether or not you’d be constructing it yourself. The cost of custom closets built by a pro ranges from $1,300 to $3,800, but you may be able to DIY it for as little as $400. By contrast, prefabricated options go as low as $200 and up to $3,000, so it’s almost always less expensive to go this route.

When storing your clothes long-term, first consider the container's breathability. While plastic bags, cardboard boxes, or vacuum sealing may be great options for short-term storage, they won’t help your clothes hold up in the long term. Breathable plastic boxes and fabric bags help with airflow, prevent mold or mildew from building up, and allow proper airflow.

When you are securing your DIY home office built-ins to the wall, you should start by locating the wall studs. You'll then want to use long screws to attach the cabinets, shelves, and bookcases directly to the wall studs. Your built-ins will be far too heavy to attach to the drywall alone by using anchors.
