"Bobby from The Patch Man came to the rescue! He did a great job with repairing a damaged ceiling that collapsed due to the broken condensate drain line. His attention to detail is second to none. Professional, friendly with a lot of experience in his field. I highly recommend Bobby and The Patch Man! Thank you!"

"My home project was a difficult one compounded by time restriction. I had my ceiling (18 feet up) that was a full size sheetrock falling down and needed extensive repair. While there were a couple of hiccoughs along the way due to its challenging nature, Jonathan and his crew listened and took really good care of me by finding solutions to unforseen problems. Moreover, after a year of high humidity and heat exposure, I cant tell where the repair was done. There aren't any cracks or discoloration that I can see a year later. Very good crew. Thank you, Jonathan. I appreciate you and your crew!"

"A pleasure to work with, and did a very good job. Repaired and painted some sheetrock and baseboard, patched and painted a ceiling area, and replaced some block paneling. All turned out very well."

"We solicited bids from three vendors. All viewed the project before bidding. One never sent a bid. Custom Painting gave us a good bid, and the third vendor bid almost double Custom Painting's bid. The project lasted two days. Custom Painting's people arrived on time each day. They did a great job all around. The carefully covered everything. The ceiling repairs were perfect. We are pleased with the paint job. I would, without hesitation, use this firm for future projects."

"It was great. The work was done professionally and beautifully. First painters I ever hired that did caulking and small repairs that would improve the quality. They always quoted price as these changes were approved. They also gave me tips about style options. I had an unattractive trim situation that had bothered me for years and they suggested a faux paint trim that corrected the unsightly problem. I'm a fan. I plan for them to paint the interior next. Great work."

"I called Nite Hawk to demo two French doors, add a large beam and install wall to wall sliding glass doors. They were very upfront and said that what I was looking for isn’t their speciality so they recommended a great company that I ended up using. Although we didn’t use Nite hawk for our project, I think there willingness to recommend another company who specializes in what I was looking for says a lot about their integrity. I’d recommend reaching out for sure."

Small jobs welcome

"Jose and his team were open to my many questions and offered their professional suggestions when installing my bathroom wall tile. They were also very mindful of the rest of my home and protected my floors and cleaned at the end of their workday. They were punctual and arrived daily as scheduled, no unscheduled skipped days or late arrivals. One of the tubs which was installed began to leak, however, they responded quickly and resolved the issue without hesitation."

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Both plaster and drywall are durable wall finishes, but they differ significantly in installation, cost, performance, and aesthetics.

Installation & Cost: Drywall installation is faster and more affordable, typically costing $1.50 to $3 per square foot. It uses premade sheets, making it a more accessible DIY project. Plastering is a labor-intensive craft that requires specialized skills, pushing costs to $2 to $10 per square foot. It involves applying a wet paste over a lath framework.

Durability & Performance: Plaster is generally more durable, longer-lasting, and provides superior soundproofing. It is also a better insulator, which can help reduce energy costs. Drywall is easier to remove for future renovations.

Aesthetics: Drywall provides a smooth, uniform surface ready for paint or texture. Plaster offers a high-end, naturally textured look that can hide imperfections and is often preferred for achieving a classic or historic aesthetic.

Which is better? The choice depends on your priorities. Drywall is ideal for those prioritizing a lower upfront cost, faster installation, and DIY potential. Plaster is the better option for a higher-end project where durability, soundproofing, and a unique, premium finish are more important than the initial cost.

You can repair plaster ceilings yourself after the cause of the ceiling damage has been addressed. However, the repair can easily take 5 hours and can be slightly challenging for those without previous experience. If you do decide to flex your DIY muscle, have a helper to help hold the ladder and pass you the tools for safety purposes.

While it’s most common to sand plaster dry, it is possible to wet-sand plaster, too. Doing so can reduce the amount of plaster dust released into the air and make it easier to work in smaller, more delicate areas (such as around wall trim). However, some people find that wet sanding leads to more imperfections, which is why larger walls are more often dry sanded to ensure an even finish.

Plaster is a beautiful finish but is labor-intensive to install and remove. It’s vulnerable to cracking and more sensitive to moisture variance than drywall. Installing plaster on a new wall is an expensive process that can take days to weeks, depending on the scope. Removing a plaster wall can also be quite expensive and time-consuming.

Yes, you can install drywall over plaster, but there are important factors to consider. While it can create a smooth, flat surface, it is often not the best approach. Installing drywall over plaster will increase the wall's thickness, which can cause issues with existing window and door frames that may no longer fit. You might also need to adjust power outlets to keep them accessible. A better, though more expensive, option is to remove the old plaster and lath entirely before installing new drywall. Drywalling directly over plaster seals in the old material, and if any problems arise later, you will need to remove both layers down to the structural beams for repairs. Given the potential complications, this job is best handled by professionals.
