"They lacked communication from the start. They came to the house on 05/12 and said they could start work on Thursday, 05/15 and finish within a week by Thursday, 05/22. The agreement was removal of popcorn ceiling, texture application, painting of the ceiling, and clean up for $3,000. We agreed to pay $700 to start , $2000 when texture was ready, and $300 when the work was completed. They began work on 05/15 and when we went to the house that evening, we saw they left our back door wide open with all of the lights on inside the house, which is a major security risk as anyone would have been able to break into our house. We advised them of this issue via text and paid them a deposit of $700 on 05/16. They worked 05/16 and requested $2,000 on 05/17 stating they would apply texture the same day at 3:30pm. We submitted another deposit of $2,000, as requested, on 05/17 but no more work was ever completed, nor has any work been done since. On 05/23 (one day past the deadline) we reached out to them to follow up and they told us they needed more time and that the project would be completed 05/28. We granted the extension and when nothing was done on 05/27 we messaged them again to confirm they would be done on 05/28, expressing our concern over the delay as we have to move in to the house and they responded “05/29”. We messaged them on 05/28 and 05/29 expressing further concern over the fact that still nothing had been done and they responded on 05/29 advising they needed another week promising to finish by 06/05. We advised them that they needed to be done by Monday 06/02 or we would have to find someone else. They did not respond to that message on 05/29, nor did they respond to our messages sent on 06/02, 06/03, 06/04. We called them on 06/04 and the calls went straight to voicemail so we called them from another phone number and they picked up advising the project would be completed 06/05. The project was not completed on 06/05 and they have not responded to any messages or calls since the phone call on 06/04. To date, no additional work was completed after 05/16. They still have a key to our house and have not responded to our request for them to return the key and give us a refund."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

A nail in drywall cannot hold very much—usually only a few pounds. A nail in a stud can add support and hold around 20 pounds. If you are trying to hang something heavier, get some help from drywall anchors—toggle bolts are very strong and able to withstand more weight.

How you hang the drywall can affect the finishing process. It's often easier to finish horizontal drywall panels, as the seams run across the wall rather than up and down. Standard drywall panels are 48 inches wide, so the seam is easy to reach without bending down or stretching your arms.

Drywall anchors aren’t necessary if there’s a stud behind the wall where you’ll be working. Studs are strong enough to support screws on their own, but they don’t run throughout the wall. If you’re doing a project that involves the entire wall and not just one part (like hanging a small painting or photo), odds are you’ll need drywall anchors at some point in the process.

You can drywall over plaster, but there are some things to consider. First, installing drywall over plaster will increase the wall’s thickness. This could create challenges for window and door frames that no longer fit the wall’s thickness. You may also have to adjust power outlets so they are accessible. When done right, drywall can create a smooth, flat appearance, but it’s best when handled by professionals.

The best way to make long, straight cuts is to use a utility knife and a T-square to score the sheet, snap along the score, and then finish the cut by cutting through the paper on the opposite side with the utility knife. If you’re making small cuts, curved cuts, or cutouts for electrical boxes or light fixtures, you can use a manual jab saw to keep costs down, but an electric spiral saw or oscillating multi-tool will get the cleanest, fastest cuts possible.
