"They lacked communication from the start. They came to the house on 05/12 and said they could start work on Thursday, 05/15 and finish within a week by Thursday, 05/22. The agreement was removal of popcorn ceiling, texture application, painting of the ceiling, and clean up for $3,000. We agreed to pay $700 to start , $2000 when texture was ready, and $300 when the work was completed. They began work on 05/15 and when we went to the house that evening, we saw they left our back door wide open with all of the lights on inside the house, which is a major security risk as anyone would have been able to break into our house. We advised them of this issue via text and paid them a deposit of $700 on 05/16. They worked 05/16 and requested $2,000 on 05/17 stating they would apply texture the same day at 3:30pm. We submitted another deposit of $2,000, as requested, on 05/17 but no more work was ever completed, nor has any work been done since. On 05/23 (one day past the deadline) we reached out to them to follow up and they told us they needed more time and that the project would be completed 05/28. We granted the extension and when nothing was done on 05/27 we messaged them again to confirm they would be done on 05/28, expressing our concern over the delay as we have to move in to the house and they responded “05/29”. We messaged them on 05/28 and 05/29 expressing further concern over the fact that still nothing had been done and they responded on 05/29 advising they needed another week promising to finish by 06/05. We advised them that they needed to be done by Monday 06/02 or we would have to find someone else. They did not respond to that message on 05/29, nor did they respond to our messages sent on 06/02, 06/03, 06/04. We called them on 06/04 and the calls went straight to voicemail so we called them from another phone number and they picked up advising the project would be completed 06/05. The project was not completed on 06/05 and they have not responded to any messages or calls since the phone call on 06/04. To date, no additional work was completed after 05/16. They still have a key to our house and have not responded to our request for them to return the key and give us a refund."

"DO NOT HIRE. Unprofessional, uncommunicative and poor workmanship. As a homeowner, I have never come across a company as unprofessional and difficult to work with as Queta Construction. Once I paid them for my fence, their communication and willingness to repair my poorly built fence went downhill. On their first day on the job, they arrived two hours late and “accidentally” tore down my neighbors gates. Although they agreed to repair them at no cost, this still prompted problems with my neighbor. After their first day on the job, they left cement, trash, hardware, bottles and their materials littered all over my yard and did not notify me when they were leaving or returning the next day. On the next day, I noticed that they had installed one of the posts on my neighbors property line and when I pointed it out, they responded with “yeah we did that so it wouldn’t press against the tree”. When I asked them if they could put the post back on my property line, they pulled out the post that had already set in cement and reused it by digging a larger hole and pouring more cement. In their contract under provision 7, it states “contract warrants all workmanship for a period of one year following completion”. In addition, provision 1 states “all work shall be completed in a workmanship like manner and in compliance with all building codes and other applicable laws”. It has been less than one year since my fence was installed and 5-6 of the boards of my fence were not nailed down properly, both of my gates would not open and Queta construction is refusing to replace the post that is consequential damage of their team installing a post off of the property line and reusing the same post after it had set. To top it off, I was told that my post split due to “sun damage” even though I paid for cedar, weather treated lumber. Queta agreed to nail down my posts and fix my gates, but only after not showing up for the job on 3 separate occasions. I would not hire them again and wanted to share my experience with photos as evidence of their negligence to follow through."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Yes, it matters which side of drywall you use. One side is smooth, and the other is rough. The smooth side should be facing outward, toward the room, while the rough side should be hidden and facing the studs and framing of the house. The smooth side will be easier to apply tape, joint compound, and, later, paint to.

It is more difficult to drywall a ceiling than it is to drywall a wall, but not so hard that DIYers can’t tackle it. One of the main issues with hanging drywall on your ceiling is getting it into place. Drywall isn’t light so, if you are hanging full drywall panels, you will need at least two (it’s better with more) people to hold the panel while you drill it into the ceiling as a single piece can weigh between 40 and 60 pounds and will need to be held in place for up to 10 minutes.

Drywall does not necessarily need to be glued to the ceiling, especially when it is properly screwed or nailed into place. Drywall is typically attached to the ceiling joists using screws or nails, ensuring a secure and stable drywall installation

However, in certain situations where additional adhesion is required, construction adhesive can be applied in combination with screws or nails. This is often done for ceilings with specific acoustic or insulation requirements. It's essential to follow local building codes and best practices to determine if adhesive use is necessary for your specific project.

A utility knife is sharp enough to score the drywall and it may work in a pinch for outlet box holes. However, one of the best tools for drywall when you need to make exact cuts for an outlet box quickly is a drywall saw. This handheld tool has a longer blade than a utility knife, so it penetrates the thickness of the drywall easily. The design of its handle and the teeth in its blade make it easier to control while cutting quicker than you can with a utility knife.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.
