"From initial call to Garage Door Services to the completion of repairs, I was treated politely and respectfully. The technician was here within an hour and a half of contact. He explained in detail what needed to be done and the approximate time it would take and the cost estimate. I asked a lot of questions, especially about safety because I am in a neighborhood with lots of children, and realize the importance of garage doors working properly to avoid accidents and injuries. "Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

There are certainly perks to hiring a general contractor, but we recommend a closet professional. The reason is that their pricing may make more sense for your project. General contractors tend to search out bigger projects, and because of this, will attach a premium to smaller amounts of work. A closet pro may also have access to a wider range of materials than general contractors (and may be able to negotiate better discounts). 

Standard door sizes aren’t one-size-fits-all, but there are common go-to dimensions. For exterior doors—like your front door—36 inches wide by 80 inches tall is typical, though you’ll see 30- or 32-inch widths too, especially in older homes. Interior doors vary more. Bedrooms and bathrooms often use 30- to 32-inch widths, and closet doors can be anything from slim singles to wide bi-folds. Height is usually 80 inches across the board; however, always measure your actual opening. “Standard” only works if it matches what’s already in place.

A slab door is a standalone door without a frame or hardware. A prehung door is a complete set that includes the door, frame, hinges, and sometimes the doorknob and lockset.

In most cases, a prehung door is the better and easier option to install, especially for DIY projects or exterior applications, as they often come pre-weatherproofed. They require fewer tools and less experience to install properly. Although prehung doors are heavier and have a higher upfront cost, the investment is often worthwhile for a complete upgrade that includes a new frame.

A slab door may be a better choice if you are on a tight budget, have a custom-sized wall opening, or only need to replace the door while keeping the existing frame. While the initial cost is lower, you will need to purchase all the hardware separately and do more DIY work to hang it, which may not result in significant time or money savings.

You can use a variety of wood to build a barn door, but the most common options include 1-by boards and 2-by boards for the backing and the decorative boards on the front of the door. Softwoods like pine will save you some money and should hold up well, while hardwoods like maple and oak will stand up to more wear and tear. You could also build the backer out of plywood to minimize the cuts you need to make. Whatever you decide on, make sure the width of the wood is compatible with the mounting brackets you buy.

Check the package of your bifold door. The width shown is half an inch larger than the bifold set. This allows at least 1/4 inch between the side jamb and pivot. When installing the top track, saw the track down to leave approximately 1/6 inch on each end. This will ensure your bifold door folds and unfolds smoothly without getting stuck in the frame.
