"Haim came out and brought his fence man with him. They gave us several options and we decided to go with a stained cedar fence with two gates. The next week they showed up and while one part of the crew was tearing down the old fence, another crew was working on the new one. It took a few days, but we now have a beautiful stained cedar fence. Like the other times they never left debris in our yard, as they cleaned up every day after their work was done. We chose a wood lattice patio arbor. It was of the same stained cedar, and it's very rustic and we are looking forward to many days sitting under the arbor to escape the Texas sun. The thing about G.H. Construction, is they show up on time and work a full day. They are supervised and if we had any questions or concerns, they responded in short order and eased our concerns. We are so pleased we are considering siding on the house. You can be sure we will use G.H."

"Thomas stained my 500 foot long 8' cedar fence. First, he power washed it and then applied the stain. He also fixed both of my gates. Thomas is very professional, attentive and conscientious. Communication was excellent. He did a wonderful job on my fence and I would definitely use him again. Check him out."

"Jarrod, the owner, was excellent to work with. I had a few estimates and he came out for a quote on a Monday and the work was finished by Friday. I had all the rotted wood replaced on the fascia boards and the entire chimney was replaced with Hardie Board. The work was done in 2.5 days. The two gentlemen that did all the work were courteous and through. The house looks fantastic."

"Amazing customer service! We were thoroughly educated on what to expect and the painters didnâ t mind the questions on site when we would ask what was happening. And they went above and beyond helping find an exact stain that we wanted we tried what felt like a million stains and Robertoâ s patience through the process was amazing. We had a crazy timeline to move into our home and these guys moved heaven and earth to finish as quickly as possible! We absolutely love our cabinets and canâ t recommend Dallas Varsity Painting enough!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

DIY staining or painting is manageable with proper preparation, including safety measures, necessary tools, and adherence to safe weather conditions for application.

Yes, you must thoroughly clean your deck before staining. If you don't, dirt, debris, grease, and mildew can get trapped between the wood and the new stain. This not only looks unsightly but also prevents the stain from penetrating the wood properly, reducing its ability to protect the deck from weather and UV rays. As a result, the stain won't last as long or look as good. Any existing mold or mildew left untreated can continue to grow beneath the new stain, potentially leading to wood rot and structural damage. Always wait at least 48 hours after cleaning for the wood to dry completely before applying stain.

It’s best to use an exterior latex acrylic paint to promote maximum adhesion to composite decking. This flexible paint type can better cope with the natural expansion and contraction that can occur with composite deck boards. Oil-based paints won’t adhere as effectively and are more likely to crack and peel as the boards flex. Testing whether your chosen paint will stick on an inconspicuous section or a spare board is a good idea.

Painted decks typically require a new coat about once every ten years. In between new coats, it's best to maintain your deck by regularly removing debris, washing it down with non-abrasive cleaners, and staying ahead of structural issues, such as loose boards and rotting wood. In some cases, painting a small section of your deck affected by damage or the sun can lower your costs and workload.

For the longest-lasting exterior paint, consider acrylic or enamel (oil-based) paints. Acrylic paints, including acrylic latex and acrylic enamel, are known for withstanding harsh weather and sun exposure. Enamel-based paints are also one of the most durable options available. While latex paint is common, it typically has a shorter lifespan than acrylic or oil-based options. The paint's finish also affects its durability; a higher gloss finish is generally more durable. For resistance to moisture and cracking, matte and satin finishes can be effective, while a high-gloss acrylic or oil-based paint offers a combination of maximum longevity and durability.
