"Doug showed up on time and got quickly to work. He inspected the water softener, found the leak, fixed it and cleaned up afterwards. Then he got to work on the kitchen sink leak which was resolved by tightening the faucet housing. Doug answered all my questions and even showed me how to DIY if these problems arise in the future, which saves me both time and money. I've used George Plumbing services for the past 10+ years and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. I trust them completely."

"Chris and Justin replaced our water t treatment system with a new water softener and iron filter system. They also put in an aerating system in our storage tank. This system is doing an amazing job. 100% soft 100% iron free water. We were paying for the same kind of system minus the aerating from a different company for a year that NEVER WORKED. Needless to say we are 100% happy!"

"The owners Chris and Eric are fantastic to work with--they are real pro's and the kind of experienced, trustworthy, and hardworking folks who ensure the job is done right.
They were quick to respond to our request for a quote and came out within a day or two to review our well situation and to suggest the proper sizing and scope of a water tank installation and associated pieces and parts. They made smart suggestions and made cost-effective recommendations so we could get the most bang for the buck.   They promptly ordered the parts and when they came in, immediately called us for installation.
After they installed the tank, reworked the well house plumbing and installed electronics to run the tank pump--all we could say was WoW!  The pump house was cleaned up, with simple plumbing lines, and the water pressure in the house jumped up from about 45 to 75 psi.  Their work made a huge difference in our house operations.   We are very appreciative of the quality and efficiency of their work.

"We had a damp spot on an exterior wall. After paying another company a couple thousand dollars for a pressure test and extensive work they swore that we did not have a leak. When the damp spot did not go away within a few months we called Big City Plumbing. For half of the price of the original plumber they located and fixed the slab leak in less time than the original company. Peter was great and I have a new company to call if I ever run into another issue. Thanks!

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Drinking hard water is not known to have any negative health impacts. Using hard water can lead to dry skin and hair, and the minerals in hard water can build up in pipes, faucets, and appliances. Hard water is more of a threat to your plumbing than it is to your health.

Most of the U.S. has hard water, especially across portions of the West and Midwest. The areas with the hardest water include parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Illinois, North and South Dakota, Ohio, and New York. You’ll find soft water in parts of New England, the Southeast, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.

It’s not a good idea to oversize your water softener. Doing so will mean the tank doesn’t get full, which can lead to channeling. This leads to a large portion of the resin beads not being utilized and the beads at the bottom of the tank being overused. Over time, this will reduce the efficiency of your system, not to mention that the upfront cost of an oversized softener is unnecessarily high. If you have a timed regeneration cycle rather than a demand-based one, you’ll also spend far more on replacing salt than you need to.

Because it’s been through the water cycle, evaporating and becoming slightly acidic thanks to dissolved carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, rainwater tends to be naturally soft compared to groundwater, which has just been in contact with limestone. However, the natural hardness level of water always depends on where you are and other factors.
