"Aaron was professional and knowledable. He identified why some masonry cement was cracking between patio stone, and repaired quickly repaired it. He was very conscientious about clean up, to include making sure the left over masonry cement was washed down so that it wouldn't kill our grass.

"Talk about down to earth and professional! Rafter JK Masonry was so easy to work with. They know their stuff and that takes away so much stress. I had roof to ground cracks in my brick due to foundation issues, in addition to corner pops. You cant even tell where everything was repaired. He matched the brick perfectly. He was there when he said he’d arrive and was genuinely easy to work with. If you need brick repair, go with Rafter JK Masonry for sure."

"Heath and his crew did a fantastic job! We had a couple of half inch cracks over our garage that were only getting bigger. Heath came out when he said he would and gave us a couple of options. We elected to go with concrete piers. Heath and Katie were excellent at communicating the process and performing the work when they said they would. They were even able to save some of our plants. I honestly didn’t expect for any of them to survive. The results were amazing! I highly recommend them for any foundation repair needs that you may have."

"They put up a retaining wall in my back yard. They came over on a late Thursday afternoon to dig the trench and we're at my house Friday morning before I left for work at 7am and we're finished by 11.30 am. It looks beautiful and surpassed my expectations. Definitely will use them again for my deck replacement. Also they were really reasonable. Would have provided pics but don't see a way to upload for this review."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, brick houses are better insulated, because the bricks slow down the passage of air from the outside to the inside and vice-versa. This helps to stabilize the internal temperature of the home. When combined with proper residential insulation, brick houses are more efficient and better insulated than other types.

You can use a regular drill to make pilot holes for gutter brackets in the wooden fascia board around the top of your house, but it’s not the best tool for brick. Instead, you’ll need a heavy-duty power tool like a hammer drill with a carbide tip bit.

To stain brick, you should use a product specifically formulated for brick, concrete, or other masonry surfaces. These stains are designed to penetrate the porous surface of the brick and bond with it. This is different from paint, which sits on the surface and is prone to peeling, flaking, and trapping moisture that can cause damage. Water-based brick stains are often recommended because they are easy to apply, even for DIYers, and they allow the brick to breathe. Avoid using regular paint on brick, as it will not adhere properly and can lead to future maintenance problems.

Two types of masonry are veneer masonry and solid masonry. Veneer masonry is thin brick or stone material attached to the face of a building. With veneer masonry, the walls support the weight of the masonry products rather than the masonry being built on a concrete footing. Solid masonry is a wall or other brick or stone structure built on a concrete footing, and the masonry supports itself.

The material you use depends on how hard-wearing your steps need to be and what you want them to look like. The most common stone for exterior steps is bluestone. It’s hard-wearing and durable, and bluestone steps cost between $15 and $30 per linear foot. Limestone is also a popular option and is mid-range, costing $25 to $50 per linear foot. You should always consider the specific requirements of your project before ordering any materials.
