"I was having AC issues in my camper and contacted Adams RV Repair owner, Chris Adams. Mr. Adams was to my camper on Friday, August 6, 2021 and give me the diagnosis of needing a new AC. Mr. Adams gave me an Amazon Link to order the proper AC unit. I paid $60 cash for this service. Mr. Adams and a helper was to my camper on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 and installed the rooftop AC. I paid Mr. Adams with a check in the amount of $260, $220 for the install and a $40 "convenience fee" he added when I paid him. When I asked him how much for the installation at the time of ordering, I was quoted $220, nothing was said about a convenience fee being tacked on until it came time to pay my bill. I discovered a water leak from the AC on the following Friday morning, August 13th. I called the Adams RV Repair office and left a message about the leak. I got no reply. I finally was able to talk to Mr. Adams on the following Tuesday, August 17th about the water leak when he got out of a doctor's appointment. He said he would check with his wife on his schedule and get back to me when you could get out. I never heard back from him. I finally connected with Mr. Adams on the phone again Thursday the 19th and learned he could not get to me until his day off on Sunday the 22nd or Monday the 23rd. I had church duties and could not do Sunday and Mr. Adams said he would check with his wife about Monday and get back to me. Mr. Adams did not call me back and we have not spoken since. I have since learned Mr. Adams caused the leak, caused by putting a screw into the base area of the AC when he secured the AC to the wood. This is the AC condensation drain area and no screws are to be used here. If Mr. Adams had used a screw with a washer, he may have gotten away with it. Worse yet, Mr. Adams secured the AC with screws when he should have used the four corner anchors that took ¼" bolts (which are also used to compress the gasket to ¾" per the installation instructions for this unit). Mr. Adams only used 3 screws, what happens to my AC when we have 50mph winds? The AC was not mounted squarely to the wood. The AC had to be unscrewed and repositioned. When Mr. Adams was there during the installation, I asked him if you got the area taped inside the camper between the intake and the outlet. He told me yes. I remember responding to him, great, you are quick. The fact of the matter is, Mr. Adams lied, and taped nothing. Furthermore, Mr. Adams left a half inch gap between the top of the center divider and the bottom of the AC which separates the air intake and air output areas. Mr. Addams jammed the thermistor into the fins of the evaporator instead of placing it on a coil as designed (destroying precious evaporator fins). Mr. Adams left all the screws from the old AC cover on the roof in addition to denting the heck out of the roof by not standing on the roof ribs (being the strongest part of the roof). I'm probably somewhat fortunate Mr. Adams caused a leak, otherwise, I likely would not have discovered his shoddy workmanship for some time. Perhaps not until a strong wind destroyed the AC. I've taken photographs and documented everything stated above. I have since shared this information and photos with Mr. Adams and sent him a letter dated August 25, 2021 requesting half of the $220 for the installation fee. I requested nothing in return for of the $40 convenience fee. Mr. Adams phoned me on the evening of September 12, 2021, (first time since August 19th) but not to make arrangements for the $120 refund I was requesting, but rather to scold me for a similar review as this I placed elsewhere. It was a high-volume conversation in which Mr. Adams used profanity on me so many times I couldn't begin to count. Threatening me with slander charges. It's not slander if the truth is told, I'm telling the truth! He claimed he was too busy to get back to me and look at the water leak (he created)."

Heating and air conditioning services FAQs

Knowing how long your existing HVAC units can last is essential to determine if you need a repair or replacement. Typically, most modern air conditioning units can last between 15 to 20 years, and most furnaces can work properly for 15 to 30 years. If your HVAC system is on the older side and you decide to replace one unit, it might make sense to replace both simultaneously to save on costs and future hassle.

While different HVAC contractors might offer higher or lower prices than competitors, the best time to replace your HVAC system is when customer demand is low. The beginning of summer and the beginning of winter bring the most demand for HVAC systems, so if you can, consider replacing your HVAC units in the early spring or fall. Many HVAC companies offer special off-season coupons that help lower the overall cost.

The average cost to hire an HVAC contractor is between $50 and $150 per hour if charging hourly. However, some HVAC contractors will charge a flat fee by the type of service they are performing—for example, an inspection can cost between $150 to $500. Keep in mind that emergency repairs—which are made after business hours or around major holidays—generally cost more than scheduled repairs.

Yes, most states require HVAC technicians to be certified, and for good reason. Hiring an unlicensed HVAC technician could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

The average cost of HVAC repairs is around $350. However, that price can be as low as $100 or as high as $2,000 or more, depending on the repair. For example, replacing a capacitor is a relatively inexpensive repair, ranging from $100 to $500. However, a compressor repair is a more expensive repair, ranging from $750 to $2,000.
