"We have been planning our deck and porch renovations for more than five years and Smoky Deck Builders built us a beautiful two-story deck with a spiral staircase and a screened in porch. Jason helped us get the plans sets and Flip, Beckett and James built the huge structure. We were impressed with their knowledge, skills, and work ethic. James and Chance did an excellent job with finish aesthetics. As with all construction projects, some issues come up but Christian always had solutions to make us happy. Isabella handled the financial things well and took care of general communications. Thank you Smoky Mountain Deck Builders for building us a beautiful deck and porch. You definitely deserve a five-star rating."

"After getting three different bids on our 13-year-old deck, we decided to go with Veteran Home Renovation. It had been showing increasing rot over time, and John walked us through two cost parameters: one for replacing flat surfaces and the other for a total rebuild. In the end, we decided to go for the total rebuild. Not only did John’s team complete the majority of the work in 3 to 4 weeks, but also John personally came back and went over punchlist items with me that he completed and sent follow-up pictures for. We live in Ohio, and the deck work was completed in Lafollette, [Tennessee]. It took a lot of trust on our part that quality work would be completed without cutting corners. We were not disappointed. In fact, I have recommended him already to some neighbors and plan on using his company again for future projects."

"Fanel American Pavers did an awesome job in paving my patio area. The area looks amazing and I would definitely call for future projects. They even cleaned around the area that didn’t required paving. After the job was complete they cleaned up the area and left everything nice and neat. Thanks Fanel American Pavers."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Brick houses can last at least 100 years with minimal maintenance. With regular care and attention, including mortar repointing, brick houses can last 500 years or more.

Do not use super glue to hang lights on brick unless you want your lights up year-round. Hot glue is a better choice because it’s easily removable with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Super glue is very hard to remove, and you could tear off parts of the brick in the removal process.

Brick spalling—which refers to the crumbly, flaky, or pitted appearance that can develop over time—is caused by a few different conditions. These include:

  • Climates with constant freeze-thaw cycles

  • Use of non-breathable sealants

  • High-pressure water cleaning

  • Improper installation

While you can’t do anything about the weather, you can preserve your bricks by cleaning them with soapy water and a good old-fashioned scrubbing. Pressure washers may be satisfying to use, but they can eventually wear away the surface of your bricks. If you don’t have advanced-level DIY skills in masonry, you can hire a reputable masonry contractor in your area for your project.

They provide excellent heat retention and durability and add a classic aesthetic to a home.

Yes, an outdoor fireplace should use fire bricks. Fire bricks are specially designed to withstand high levels of heat and thus won’t crack as easily as regular bricks when exposed to the intense heat inside a fireplace.
