"The mortar on my front brick steps was crumbling away. JNA did a great job repairing them! The associate worked all day to remove all of the old mortar and then filled in all of the spaces with new mortar. He even repaired the sides of my steps that were hidden. The project was completed in one day. My parents were shocked when they saw how good my steps looked when they came over for a visit. The craftsmanship and courtesy exhibited were amazing. The owner even contacted me after his associate left to make sure I was satisfied with the work. I highly recommend them!"

"Extremely well. John and his uncle were very personable and very professional. They worked methodically and carefully, yet very smoothly together, and put together a deck which was even better than what we had discussed when John and I had first talked about the project."

Customers say: Super punctual

"Sean and his team did an outstanding job with our backyard hardscape including an amazing waterfall. He guided us through the entire process and explained his next step in great detail. Even with weather related challenges, these guys did not miss a beat. When the irrigation system installers came, he worked with them almost flawlessly and to my satisfaction. I could not be happier."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

When painting brick, each application method has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Spraying is significantly faster but may not penetrate deeply beyond the surface layer. Rolling is effective for working paint into the brick's texture but can be less effective on mortar joints. If you opt for a roller, choose a thick nap of at least a half-inch to ensure paint gets into all the crevices for even coverage. Using a brush is generally not recommended as it is very time-consuming and provides poor surface penetration. Ultimately, a combination of spraying followed by back-rolling is often the best strategy for a durable and even finish.

Removing paint from brick can have both aesthetic and practical value. Some people prefer the timeless look of bare brick, making it worthwhile to remove old paint layers. Brick also lasts longer when unpainted, as paint traps moisture, causing the brick to deteriorate more quickly. If your brick walls are already in bad shape, stripping the paint off might do more harm than good.

Rock salt and ice melts contain sodium chloride, aka salt, and are corrosive to metal and concrete. If used frequently over time, it can cause corrosion, discoloration, chipping, and cracking to patios, walkways, and driveways. You can try a rock salt alternative or hire a professional snow removal company instead.

You can hang holiday lights on brick without drilling by using hot glue, outdoor tape, or brick clips for your project. There are plenty of alternatives to consider, so consult a professional Christmas light installer to discuss the best options to preserve your brick exterior.
