While water in your basement is unlikely to make you sick unless it’s coming from a sewage backup, mold is likely to start to grow in wet areas within 24 hours, and mold can make you sick. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), inhaling mold spores can cause allergy symptoms, including runny nose, itchy eyes, difficulty breathing, wheezing, and itchy skin. Individuals with pre-existing respiratory issues like asthma and immunocompromised individuals are at an elevated risk of symptoms when inhaling mold spores.

Mold can grow on garage ceiling insulation, which is why it’s important to install a vapor barrier behind the insulation and keep the space cooled and heated as you would your living area. Doing so will more or less eliminate the risk of mold growing on your garage ceiling insulation. You can also install a self-draining dehumidifier to help remove moisture, or opt for a foam board insulation or spray foam insulation that won’t harbor moisture and mold.

Mildew and mold are not different—mildew is a specific type of mold and yes, it can become dangerous if left untreated. It would be amazing if we were all biochemists but because we most likely aren’t, it isn’t wise to assume any mold is mildew on sight alone.
