"All work was done in a timely manner and when they said it would be done. Everyone was respectful and kind. Pricing is competitive. Installation was finished 3/21 and we have had no issues. Both gates function as they should and the dogs are so happy with their space."

"Havier and his crew did a remarkable job installing a new sprinkler system. They not only installed the system in one day but I has laid sod ahead of contacting Javier to put in the system. Javier said they would peel back the new sod and hand dig to install the system since the trencher would tear up the sod. Javier was correct everything went back the way it was to start with. You can not tell anything was dug up. Excellent job!!! I would highly recommend Javier Ramos Landscaping LLC for your landscaping needs. They really take pride in their work."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Address urgent excavating projects immediately if you notice drainage failures, foundation issues, or active erosion. Columbia experiences heavy summer thunderstorms and expansive clay soil shifts that quickly worsen these problems. You should schedule purely cosmetic grading or landscaping excavating projects for October or November. This post-hurricane window offers the best weather conditions in SC for non-urgent ground work.

Helpful?

Keep erosion control materials like silt fencing on hand to manage heavy runoff during excavating. You also need a submersible pump or dewatering equipment to handle sudden water intrusion from Columbia summer storms. Maintain soil compaction tools to prevent settling in the local clay soils. Finally, store temporary tarps to protect open trenches and keep appropriate drainage aggregate readily available.

Helpful?

Contact SC 811 at least three business days before starting any excavating to mark underground utilities. Next, verify your local permit requirements and check FEMA maps to see if your property sits in a flood zone. Review Columbia stormwater ordinances and identify any recorded drainage easements. Schedule your project between October and April to avoid peak storm season delays.

Helpful?

Inspect past excavating work each spring for winter rain settlement and slope erosion. In early summer, check for soil cracking as the SC heat dries out the clay. Following major late-summer storms, assess trenches for undercutting or sediment buildup. Use the mild Columbia fall weather to perform necessary repairs and stabilize disturbed soil before winter rain events arrive.

Helpful?

A major mistake homeowners make during excavating is failing to contact SC 811 three days before digging. Skipping this step risks striking dangerous underground utilities. Another common error involves underestimating the local red clay soil. Digging during dry periods without accounting for soil expansion after rain causes trench collapses. Finally, many ignore Columbia stormwater regulations and FEMA flood zone restrictions.
