Emergency services offered

"Vista started in what seemed like a very organized matter, but communication started failing throughout the project. Our sales person was let go early on and our initial bid was far too unclear, so we had to rework expectations and ESPECIALLY unrealistic time frames with our construction manager. He also left the project before the end of the work. Overall the work quality was OK, but communications and timeliness were a real issue throughout. I found the guys that were onsite to be friendly and accommodating, but the process - which seemed so organized - got very chaotic at the end and we were just glad for it to be over. There were weeks when we'd hope to get answers on dates and it was hard to get them, and multiple times we were told the day of an expected service visit, that they'd be delayed a week. These guys are certainly NOT crooks and can do decent work, but seems like they need to revisit their structure and how much they take on. I suspect these guys are best at the sun-rooms they promote more than other home work."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Whether you’re building a new home or building an extension on your existing property, you will likely need both a structural engineer and an architect. A structural engineer will determine what loads your foundation and framing can safely handle, and an architect will draw plans according to those structural calculations to simplify the building process. You can start by contacting a structural engineer near you, as many work alongside architects and can get all of the prep work done at once.

Cathedral ceilings make a statement in your home, but at the cost of your attic space. Normal attics are wide open, which allows warm air to move around and exit your home. Because of this, cathedral ceilings make your home less energy efficient and put your ceiling at risk of venting issues if you’re not careful. They also reduce your attic storage space, potentially cause an echo, and even make it harder to change a light bulb.

The process of hiring a structural engineer starts by finding reliable professionals in your area and comparing quotes from at least three of them. From there, you can narrow down your selection by asking some leading questions:

  • Do you have experience working in my specific area?

  • Do you have professional indemnity insurance?

  • What will your structural report cover?

  • Do you charge a flat fee for a structural report or by the hour?

  • How long have you been in business?

  • Do you have a list of customer references?

The 10 10 rule describes the formula most contractors use to determine how much to charge for a job. Allowing for 10% overhead above the total projected cost to do the work and 10% profit sets a contractor up for success, even if there are delays or other problems on the project. This formula isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, but it is a ballpark figure to begin with when estimating your expenses on a job.

If you’re building new construction or adding onto your existing home, hiring a structural engineer is not only worth it but it’s probably required by your local building department. Structural engineers will ensure you aren’t making your home unsafe in the building process, which is crucial from a safety perspective but also a legal one. It’s also worth hiring a structural engineer if you’re making changes to structural components, like removing a load-bearing wall.
