13 years of experience

I am a general contractor located in State College, PA. I do general residential construction like basements, kitchens, bathrooms, small additions, ADA access, roofing, and home performance upgrades (air sealing and insulation). I have a landscape architecture degree, and have been doing construction in State College, PA for the last 2 years. First with Envinity and more recently with Blue Moon Builders. I am now looking for work on my own. I have experience with high performance construction like LEED, and would like to build high performance homes in State College that meet Passive House standards.

Insulation questions, answered by experts

One of the clearest signs that your insulation isn’t working as well as it should be is a noticeable difference in temperature throughout your home. One room might feel icy while another is hot as Arizona—this indicates that some parts of your home are either retaining or losing heat more than others. Additionally, a sudden increase in your energy bills, evidence of pests or rodents, or evident water damage are other signals that warrant a thorough inspection of your insulation and potential replacement.

Insulating ducts prevent or significantly reduce condensation by reducing temperature differences between the duct surface and surrounding air. Proper insulation also minimizes sweating, improves energy efficiency, and prevents moisture damage. However, if humidity levels are unusually high or there are air leaks, additional measures like sealing ducts and using a dehumidifier may be needed.

Exposed ductwork can sweat just like ductwork placed behind walls, sometimes even more so. Ductwork sweats—like a cold drink on a hot day—because of a temperature imbalance between the air in the duct and the air in the room. In a crawl space or wall, this temperature can equalize faster due to the small space but in lofts and open rooms, that wouldn’t happen as quickly. Many people insulate their ducts for this reason.

Yes, you should insulate your PEX pipes if you’re wondering how to keep water pipes from freezing. Pipes in uninsulated rooms or outside the house should always be insulated. If you’re looking to save money, you may not always need to install insulation on PEX pipes that are running through interior walls with insulation.

When looking for a company who installs insulation, your best bet is usually to work with an insulation contractor or professional insulation company. If you can't find a local insulation company, working with a general contractor can be another option. No matter who you hire, always confirm that they have experience.
