"Vasiliy is an amazingly talented craftsman with many talents and years of experience. Our nearly 100 year old deteriorating brick chimney was leaking water into the interior of the house and had to be repaired. Vasiliy came highly recommended to me by one of the best contractors in Portland, and I called upon him to fix it. The chimney was red brick, but Vasiliy suggested a lighter, golden color brick as it was more economical. Since our house is yellow, the golden color looked even better than red brick would have, and I saved money. The chimney is beautiful, and the repair/rebuild was so well done that Ithink it will last another 100 years,"

Gas Fireplace Service questions, answered by experts

Typically, a chimney cap will last from three to 25 years. This wide range is due to variables like climate, the material the cap is made from, and how often you use your fireplace. Regular inspections and maintenance can help extend the life of your chimney cap.

A chimney sweep costs $130 to $380, with an average price of about $255. It’s important to schedule a chimney cleaning—and inspection—annually, preferably before you start using your fireplace. A chimney sweep will clean the entire flue, scraping off creosote, dirt, and other debris.

While chimney caps are an essential component of maintaining a safe, long-lasting chimney, they have disadvantages, too. The mesh of the chimney cap clogs easily with creosote, making it more difficult for the necessary oxygen to reach the fire. Chimney caps also develop discoloration and rust stains over time, causing damage to interior chimney walls.

Fireplace inserts can increase home value when installed correctly. Since they improve heating efficiency significantly, this will be a bonus to homeowners who are looking for a functional alternative heat source. Plus, inserts are less maintenance and less of a liability than a traditional fireplace. You’re very likely to recover fireplace insert installation costs when you sell your home.

In addition to scheduling an annual inspection, it’s a good idea to clean your gas fireplace at least once or twice per year. It’s a simple process that involves removing and scrubbing the glass, cleaning off the logs and rocks, vacuuming the inside, and wiping down the exterior. It should take about an hour.
