"Dirty Ed's was prompt, punctual, and delivered the promised service. Their assessment of the needed repairs was accurate and their bid for the custom chimney cap and brick and mortar repairs was VERY fair and competitive. I would use them again for any chimney/fireplace need. They were very responsive by phone and adaptable to scheduling needs. They also inspected the dry vent (which needed NO cleaning) at no extra cost. A first rate operation!"

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts

Homeowners insurance does not cover DIY mistakes, so tread lightly if you plan to tackle your own home repairs or renovations. If you cause damage to your home while attempting repairs or renovations yourself, the cost of fixing the damage is often considered your responsibility. Most policies only cover damage caused by covered perils like fire, theft, or weather—not by homeowner errors.

Yes, most homeowners insurance policies cover fire damage and restoration, provided the fire was not set intentionally or caused by negligence. Accidental fires, such as those from electrical issues, cooking, or gas, are typically covered. Your policy will usually cover emergency services like roof tarping, the full cost of remediation and rebuilding, and may also cover alternative housing while your home is being restored. You will be responsible for paying your policy's deductible. It is important to check your policy details to see how coverage is calculated—it may be for the full replacement cost of damaged items or the actual cash value, which accounts for depreciation. To expedite your claim, contact your insurance company immediately and have all necessary documentation ready.

Neglecting to clean your chimney can lead to serious safety hazards. A primary risk is the buildup of creosote, a highly flammable substance that can ignite and cause a dangerous chimney fire. This buildup can also create blockages in the flue, resulting in poor venting of smoke, soot, and toxic gases like carbon monoxide, which can then enter your home and create dangerously poor indoor air quality. Additionally, creosote is acidic and can damage the chimney's mortar and metal components over time, potentially allowing smoke to leak into your house. To prevent these issues, it is essential to schedule an annual chimney cleaning with a professional.

Call 911 immediately. If you have a fire extinguisher or fire blanket near the laundry room, you can attempt to extinguish the fire, but don’t open or touch the dryer. If you can’t put the fire out, evacuate yourself, your family, and your pets from the house, closing the laundry room door behind you. Turn off the electricity to your home via the outside fuse box, then wait for the fire department. After a dryer fire, have your home’s electrical system inspected to make sure there isn’t any damage.

The first step is removing water or chemical residue, if applicable, after extinguishing. Next, your professional will clean up soot, remove damaged materials, treat the smoke damage, and complete any necessary structural repairs. After that, your pro will begin the build-back process and install finishes to restore your home to its previous condition.
