Small jobs welcome

"Pat has designed a number of homes of which I have lived in or have built for sale. Along with the structural engineer, everything worked well as planned. I can say for sure the design department is a real value as I have built other architect, drawn homes that cost much more to build not to mention the design fees. Pat has the experience , and the eye to design any type of build . DB now retired homebuilder."

"I highly recommend Alan Olin for any architectural/design work. He made possible the 7000 sqft $6 million owner/builder custom home we built in Los Altos Hills. He took my design requirements, made appropriate suggestions and produced the drawings and specifications needed for city and county approvals. He has a wealth of experience in residential building regulations and works cooperatively with engineers, planners and building department officials to effectively solve problems. His recommendations for structural engineers, surveyors etc were excellent and he is very easy to work with."

"Working with Sky was a huge pleasure and our home turned out truly unique. We chose Sky for his style and perspective, and in the end, our home is absolutely stunning and unlike any other home weâ ve been in. He knows how to bring fresh new ideas but also honor the history of our old home. He was willing and able to work with our budget and helped us move the timeline along quickly. He helped us through the process of choosing a contractor and worked very closely with them through every last detail. Throughout the process, his attention to detail and thorough communication really stood out. So working with him was a joy, we had good contractors, and in the end the home turned out absolutely lovely. Weâ d highly recommend working with him if you get the chance."

"Beautiful concrete slab was installed in our backyard. Additionally, the crew installed concrete steps for us. Was completed in one week. Regarding door installation, first of all, do not purchase Jeld Wen doors! Ever! McKenzie Builders Group has fought long and **** ** their own time to fix a defect that was Jeld Wen’s fault. Kitchen demo, header install, and window install. Fast quality work and great prices. We will hire them for our outside patio next year."

Architects questions, answered by experts

Get prepared to meet with an architect by having a clear idea of what you’re looking for, a list of questions to ask, and as many project details as you can provide. The more information you can provide and receive from a prospective architect will help you decide who to hire.

Mid-century modern architecture was a popular home style throughout the U.S. from the 1950s to 1970s. Most homes feature a wide and symmetrical floor plan with low-sloped roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows. Its minimalism and balanced appearance are back on the home style scene, particularly when maximizing sunlight, airflow, and a blend with the home's natural surroundings.

Italianate architecture is a reinterpretation of Renaissance styles, combining elements of Italian farmhouses and villas with Victorian materials and construction. This home style emerged in the Victorian era, gaining popularity in the U.S. in the mid-to late-1800s. The style came about in response to what many then viewed as the too-rigid and stuffy Classical style designs.

Cathedral ceilings make a statement in your home, but at the cost of your attic space. Normal attics are wide open, which allows warm air to move around and exit your home. Because of this, cathedral ceilings make your home less energy efficient and put your ceiling at risk of venting issues if you’re not careful. They also reduce your attic storage space, potentially cause an echo, and even make it harder to change a light bulb.

In most cases, you don't need to hire an architect for a garage conversion. Your garage conversion contractor should have the skills and experience to help create your desired design. However, if the scope of the conversion is large and complex, and your budget allows, it's smart to hire an architect to oversee the design.
