Small jobs welcome

"As owner/designer/builder, I hired Mark to validate the structural design of an atypical home on the Sandy River with challenging structural details. Mark also supported me during the building review process as part of his bid. The plans went through the county review first pass with no changes. After the start of construction, Mark advised on inspection issues and as built issues that came up allowing the project to move without delays. Even though he was on vacation, he responded to my requests during construction. The only improvement I would suggest is a bit more one on one collaboration early on to be on same page conceptually but with the pandemic and heavy client load in todays building environment, to be fare, that is a challenge for all engineers and my project was an oddity. I would use Mark again on a future house. He has integrity and that's number one."

"I cannot believe this company has ever done residential building plans before! I was incredulous at their incompetence. Not going back to them even if my purchased-elsewhere ADU building plans which I paid to have them revise do not pass the city permitting process, again! DO NOT do business with this company!"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

In Beaverton, frequent rainfall and high humidity require structural engineering projects to prioritize advanced waterproofing, robust drainage systems, and moisture-resistant materials. Local seismic activity means earthquake-resistant designs with reinforced foundations and flexible connections are essential. The region’s clay-rich soils can expand and contract, impacting foundations, while freeze-thaw cycles may cause surface cracking, making careful material selection and site-specific planning crucial.

Helpful?

Before starting a structural engineering project in Beaverton, arrange a thorough soil assessment to identify clay or expansive soils, which are common locally. Secure all required permits and allow time for plan reviews. Use utility location services to prevent accidental line strikes. Review neighborhood covenants and check for environmental restrictions, such as wetlands. For remodels, have a structural assessment done to uncover hidden issues early.

Helpful?

In Beaverton, hidden costs often arise from soil stabilization if expansive clay or poor drainage is discovered during excavation. Utility relocations can be necessary due to dense underground networks. Plan revisions may be required after permit reviews. Environmental compliance, such as tree preservation or wetland mitigation, can add complexity. Limited site access, especially in established neighborhoods, may also increase project logistics needs.

Helpful?

In Beaverton, regular structural maintenance should include inspecting foundations for signs of shifting or moisture intrusion, especially after heavy rain. Clean gutters and drainage systems frequently to prevent water pooling near the foundation. Examine seismic connections and moisture barriers for wear. Watch for wood rot in crawl spaces and basements, and monitor retaining walls for movement, as local soils can cause gradual settling.

Helpful?

When hiring in Beaverton, prioritize structural engineers with proven experience in local seismic design and knowledge of regional soil conditions. Look for professionals who communicate clearly and collaborate with area contractors. Check for recent references from Beaverton projects and ensure they use current structural assessment tools. Avoid those unfamiliar with local building codes or who provide unusually low bids, as this may indicate inexperience.
