"As owner/designer/builder, I hired Mark to validate the structural design of an atypical home on the Sandy River with challenging structural details. Mark also supported me during the building review process as part of his bid. The plans went through the county review first pass with no changes. After the start of construction, Mark advised on inspection issues and as built issues that came up allowing the project to move without delays. Even though he was on vacation, he responded to my requests during construction. The only improvement I would suggest is a bit more one on one collaboration early on to be on same page conceptually but with the pandemic and heavy client load in todays building environment, to be fare, that is a challenge for all engineers and my project was an oddity. I would use Mark again on a future house. He has integrity and that's number one."

"I retained Pat to prepare construction drawings in late 2020 for our new home on the Oregon coast. As a retired Structural Engineer, I can tell you that I was very happy with the entire drawing package prepared for our house. There was no problem getting a building permit. Pat used her usual structural engineering consultant to provide the necessary engineering for our house. I reviewed the architectural as well as the structural engineer’s drawings in detail. The entire package was very professional. I would recommend The Design Department, Inc. to any person wanting to have plans prepared for a custom home."

"During wind storm a tree fell on out buildings. A garage and 2 sheds. This company was fast in tarping garage roof to keep rain from getting in. Also, Anwar was quick to give estimates on repairing garage roof and sheds. His crews put new roof on garage and sheds as well as replacing broken rafters caused by the tree. They prepped and painted garage and sheds. They look brand new. Anwar interfaced with my insurance company to get additional considerations from the original insurance estimate. I was especially appreciative of his help. You can't go wrong by hiring Dluxe Construction!!!"

"I contracted with TVP for engineering plans for a home addition in February, 2023. The sales person Phil McDodson, made an agreement to stay with the project through to the permit but walked away as soon as the county required additional information. At that point Janae Spinney stepped in and would not quit on me until that promise was complete. A special thanks to Joseph and Caleb for getting us through to the end. Every engineer and staff member with TVP was polite, knowledgeable and saw the job through. It was just approved January, 2025. Great company and I appreciate all you did for us!"

"Matthew Bruce exceeded our expectations. Our 92-year-old dad fell while using the bathroom and injured himself. We needed an immediate response to make the bathroom safe. Matthew responded to my request very quickly. He asked questions about the situation that showed he had the expertise we needed. He came to the house within a day of agreeing to perform the work and completed the most urgent task that day. He needed other tools to complete the installation of the grab bar drilled into the shower tiles, so he had to return at a later time. He communicated clearly when he could return and completed the task. Additionally, he cleaned up after his work and was pleasant to workMatthew Bruce exceeded our expectations. "JDV Architecture was a dream to work with from start to finish. We gut remodeled/moved walls/deleted a bathroom and created an additional bedroom within the existing foot print of our 2600 sf home. All of JDVâ s spacial planning ideas looked great on paper, but the final product was better than we could have imagined. We could not have done this without Juanâ s vision. Start to finish JDV made this large and extensive remodel easy to manage."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

If you’re building new construction or adding onto your existing home, hiring a structural engineer is not only worth it but it’s probably required by your local building department. Structural engineers will ensure you aren’t making your home unsafe in the building process, which is crucial from a safety perspective but also a legal one. It’s also worth hiring a structural engineer if you’re making changes to structural components, like removing a load-bearing wall.

No, beams are the primary load-bearers for flooring or roofing systems, and they distribute the weight of the structure to your foundational supports, while joists bear far less weight and distribute their loads to the beams. Beams are usually thicker and longer, and they have support posts or foundation walls beneath them for support.

A split-level home is one that has several staggered floors connected by short staircases, while a split floor plan separates the primary bedroom from the rest of the bedrooms. Split floor plans are most often found in single-story homes, while split-level homes are always at least two stories.

Costs depend on unit complexity, labor, wall mounting needs, and additional accessories like floating shelves.

A freestanding brick wall that's only one brick thick can usually stand six to eight feet high. If you need a higher wall, it should be at least two bricks thick for adequate stability, and it might require a footing to support the added weight. Additionally, some areas have regulations and codes dictating how high a brick wall can be, so check with local code enforcers to ensure your proposed wall complies with any regulations.
