"Josh with Good Clean Fun did an amazing job on our very mossy roof. Because we have a 12 pitch roof, no one would do the job. He contacted us back immediately, gave us a fair bid, was on time, and explained (and showed us pictures) of what he had to do to get our roof cleaned. We are very pleased with his service and professionalism. We would highly recommend Josh with Good Clean Fun to any of our friends. Thank you for such an amazing job!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Hail is unlikely to damage a tar and gravel roof because the hailstones will hit the protective gravel rather than your delicate roof membrane. A tar and gravel roof is the most resilient flat roof option, which means it’s the best one for areas that see hail, fallen tree debris, and blown debris from intense winds.

Gable roof construction can last for 100 years or more without needing structural repairs, although the lifespan depends on your climate. Since gable roofs are great at shedding rain and snow, the actual roofing material on top will last for between 20 and 100 years or more, depending on the material you choose. If you’re unsure that your gable roof is up to par, have a roof inspector take a look.

A standard roof can hold a live load of about 20 pounds per square foot. However, gable roofs often have steeper-than-average slopes, so calculating their weight capacity can be challenging. If the slope of your gable roof is greater than 4:12, the live load needs to be decreased to allow for a larger dead load. Ask your roofer exactly how much weight your roof can support.

You can secure roof decorations like inflatables and other Christmas decor by tying a rope or attacking bungee cords to your roof clips. Depending on the pitch of your roof, you can use sandbags for extra support. Like with Christmas lights, avoid using staples or duct tape.

Roofing felt is the most common type of roof underlayment, likely because it has been around the longest. It’s called roofing felt because it is often made of felt soaked in asphalt. Depending on the type of roofing a home has, roofing felt comes in different thicknesses.

If properly installed and maintained, roofing felt should last between 10 and 25 years.
