We treat diabetes very aggressively to get a patient to the current recommended goals in order to improve quality of life, and prevent long term damage to the body (what we call end-organ damage such as retinal damage causing loss of vision, kidney damage, circulatory damage, erectile dysfunction, nerve damage causing diabetic neuropathy, etc.).
