"It went very well.  He was very detail oriented and there were no hidden costs.  The bathroom turned out even better than we imagined.  We were on vacation when he worked on the bathroom and when we came home our bathroom was nicer than the resort we were staying at!  He had a lot of great ideas and was willing to work with us on what we wanted.  The subcontractors that came in were great as well."

"Before the Memorial Day 2019 tornadoes, I contacted Nu-Finish for a roofing and gutter replacement quote. I was concerned that my roofing project would be delayed due to the the damage in the area but the Nu-Finish team completed the project on time. While there were some issues that cropped up during the roof and gutter replacement, Nu-Finish maintained excellent communication and made sure I was completely satisfied. I would use their services again and would recommend them to you too."

"Ryan and his crew (David&Goliath) did a wonderful job. They are easy to communicate with, gave me a fair quote (I got several), and completed the project on time. They replaced a 15 year-old fence that was falling apart between my neighbor's house and mine. It was a bit of a tricky project because of the ground leveling, and a big tree that had to be dealt with, but Ryan helped devise and execute a plan to make it work. Anyone having fence issues that require some creativity and out-of-the-box thinking give them a call."

Driveway Gates questions, answered by experts

Electric gates can be forced open if someone applies enough force to the edge furthest from the mounting bracket. You can reduce this risk by adding an electric lock to your gate opener. However, automatic gate openers generally help deter intruders, especially when paired with outdoor lighting and security cameras. Other home security tips include trimming trees surrounding the area for added visibility and installing motion sensors in your yard.

Hiring a reliable gate company starts by finding an installer with at least five years of experience in your area. This method will ensure they understand local laws and regulations and are familiar with the permitting process. You can also ask the following questions to ensure a smooth installation:

  • Have you worked with my gate material in the past?

  • Do you have customer references I can call?

  • Are you fully insured?

  • Will you pull the necessary permits for the installation?

  • Do you provide any kind of warranty for the gate’s functionality?

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Fence gates sag because they have no support on the latch side of the gate to help hold them aloft. A gate wheel fixes that problem by providing support for that latch side. Remember that the ground must be level in front of the gate so the wheel can roll freely when you open and close it. If the terrain is uneven or slopes, a gate wheel won’t work.

For homeowners concerned about security, an electric gate may offer peace of mind. Electric gates will require a code or remote to open, so you don’t have to worry about young children getting out of the yard or someone breaking onto your property by simply swinging open the gate. But because it needs power to operate, installing an electric gate will be more complex and expensive.
