Customers say: True professional

"We bought a house in Granville Village with a carport. The carport was in poor condition structurally and we wanted it converted into an attached, two-car garage if possible (something rather rare for that part of the village). The project was tricky. The village said that we were not allowed to remove the carport and build a new structure (the garage) because it was so close to the neighbor's yard. We could, however, convert the carport to a garage as long as we did not take down the existing structure. Unfortunately, the building department said the foundation for the carport was bad and it needed to be replaced. This left us with a problem.
We hired Ed Compton and his sons through Craigslist and we were very glad we did. Ed's solution was to prop up the roof above the carport with temporary walls, keeping the roof of the carport intact. Then, he removed the carport walls and existing foundation. Next, he poured a new foundation and installed new, permanent walls to support the roof. Subcontractors (who were very good) poured the garage floor and installed electrical. After the garage door, back door, and windows were installed, the project was done. The project took about 4 weeks and the finished project was beautiful. The new garage blended perfectly with our house.
Ed was more expensive than several other folks, but we think it was worth the extra price. He is a perfectionist and insists on doing everything carefully and correct. He also takes pride in his work. His makes sure the finished product is something that he would be proud of it it were on his own home. We were also very happy interacting with Ed's sons, who worked with him most days. They were very conscientious about their work and friendly. It was a real pleasure hiring a family-owned and operated business for this job.
We were very pleased with Ed. He is currently working on another, smaller project inside our house.

"Good work; uses subs but is careful with screening the people he uses. Timing can be an issue, as with any good contractor, you need to plan in advance and be patient, plus my projects were relatively small. Dave and his subcontractor worked with me to work out a date when I could be home.

Subcontractors questions, answered by experts

Custom homes can take an average of 18 months to build, mainly due to the lengthy design process, and most projects take somewhere between 12 and 24 months. When you work with the right custom home builders near you, they can help you map the road ahead and understand what can speed up or delay the timeline. Choosing locally available materials, for example, can speed things up without losing that customized touch.

Yes, pros can offer guidance to achieve desired aesthetics and match existing decor.

The country's most famous Neoclassical architecture appears in major government buildings and college campuses. The White House is unmistakably the most famous example, though the Capitol Building and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello are also iconic uses of the design.

It is technically possible to draw your own blueprints, but the process is extremely involved and really demands help from an expert. A professional architect has an understanding of design elements, interior design, the functionality of different rooms in a home, and how everything from furniture, outlets, and light switches should be laid out to serve you and your family best. Hiring an architect for blueprints can get expensive, but it’s the most responsible way to begin a new construction project. If you’re keen on DIYing, you could consider starting the process and then having a professional take over.

Federal architecture is most common in urban areas throughout the New England states, including the older parts of New York, Pennsylvania (namely, Boston and Philadelphia), Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. The style also dominated in parts of Georgia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, so many historical homes in the area embody this home design. Salem, MA, has two historic districts that predominantly feature this architectural style: Chestnut Street District and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.
