"Charged $510 for 1.5 hour pool closing! I called early to get on the schedule as typically closings build up quickly. I called Waters Edge 7/23/2022 at 10:23 am to schedule a closing. I was told that I was one of the firsts on the closing schedule so could choose what dates I wanted to close. I chose the last week of August/beginning of September. I also inquired as to how much the closing would be and was "quoted" $75 per hour per person and she did not know whether there would be one or two people sent out but it shouldn’t be over $325 or so to close, which is pretty conventional from the past. After no one came the second week of September, I called on 9/12/2022 at 11:53am to see if was still on the schedule. I was advised that my order was on a work truck and yes I was still scheduled. Mind you that now that I have been chlorinating and keeping the pool running another week. When the owner called, I was fed a spiel of hard times and cost increases for this company but understand this, we all are in hard times and the dependency and expectation to close the pool and waiting on this company incurred additional expenses for me as well to maintain a pool that is idle. In the mean time I ordered an undercover for my pool and called back to advise I did not need them to put the cover on, thinking this should save time and cost. When there was again a no show for the 3rd week in September, (again maintaining an idle pool), I called again and left a message asking if they were going to close my pool or if I should find someone else to close. Again I received, no reply. On 9/22/2022 they came to close the pool while I was not home. No advance notice, calls or communication to lower the water level, prep the pool, nada. When I got home and noticed the pool was closed I called to ask for an invoice but was told the billing person was not available but she would be sending it out within the day. I received a $510 invoice in the mail on 10/8/2022 and freaked out! I wanted an explanation on why this was so much for 1.5 hours of work and called to ask for someone to call me back. The owner Steve called me back at 7:40 am 10/11 and I was abruptly told that their hourly rate is $145 an hour per person and the two workers they sent stood around twiddling their thumbs until the water level was dropped. If I had known when they were coming I could have dropped the level, but again no communication whatsoever. He also complained that his costs have increased for everything including putting in $1000 a week in his trucks for gas. Well my costs had increased too due to the negligence of a late pool closing and to boot $510 ($435 labor, $75 for chems) for 1.5 hours is absurd! I have obtained estimates from other companies and even the highest is $100 less and that’s with putting on the cover, all inclusive! When I told Steve that I was quoted the $75 per hour charge, he said “the people in the office don’t know what to quote", and that he is in the field and their rate is $145 per person per hour and if he asked them if they quoted this amount they would say, “I didn’t say that” so really it’s my word against theirs and I am stuck with paying $510 for a simple closing! Why in the h*** would you have someone in the front office, scheduling services and not knowing what your hourly rate is? There is no customer loyalty anymore anywhere. Next time I will know to obtain a quote in writing even if it’s with a company that I used to trust."

We are a family owned and operated company with experience dating back to 1984! Columbus is our main area, but we offer sales, service, and delivery anywhere in Ohio and the surrounding states. Our service truck is stocked with parts, chemicals, and filters, therefore, we can often times get your spa fixed in one trip.

"Called Buckeye Spa to diagnose and fix a problem with our spa/hot tub. The problem: The low speed setting for the jets worked just fine on filtration mode and upon pressing the jets button once. The high speed setting however, was not working when pressing the jets button a second time. It would make a noise like it was trying to engage, then nothing. Brandon came out to look at it and quickly came to the determination that the motor needed replaced to fix the problem, despite me informing him that the current motor was approximately 2 years old. Unrelated to the high/low speed jets problem, he said our ozone component needed replaced. All in all, his estimate to replace the ozone and motor and including labor/trip charge came to $1400 plus tax. While it was more than I was hoping to spend, I told him to go ahead and do it while he was here if that will fix our problem. He had the new motor with him, conveniently. Despite the new motor being installed however, the spa has the exact same problem as before. Upon calling Brandon to inform him of this, he claimed we had the very rare instance where the problem wasn’t the motor but the circuit board. I asked if there was any refund process, or what the next steps would be since he replaced our reasonably presumed working motor only to have the same exact problem persist. He said he had already disposed of our old motor and that it didn’t matter anyway, because we had the new one installed already and there would be no refund of any kind. In the time since, I have learned more about the process and spoken with 2 additional hot tub techs for second opinions (one from Cal Spas themselves, the brand of the spa/hot tub). According to both of these sources, based on the description of my problem they would not have immediately skipped to the replacement of a motor, even without the knowledge of the motor being only approximately 2 years old. Their recommendation was to ensure the proper power was getting from the circuit board to the high speed connection on the motor. They both thought it was a very odd step to replace a major component like the pump without first testing to see if there was an issue with the circuit board, considering the test is not time consuming or complicated. TLDR: Buckeye Spa came out to fix an issue, he replaced a working motor with a new motor, I gave him $1500, and our spa has the same exact issue it had before."

Pool and Spa Servicing questions, answered by experts

For a fully-foamed hot tub, freezing typically occurs when the temperature drops below 28 degrees Fahrenheit and remains at or below this level continuously for a minimum of 36 hours. If your hot tub and pumps are still operational, however, the water circulates, and this continuous movement helps prevent freezing, even in very cold conditions. This circulation, along with the insulation provided by the foam, helps maintain the water temperature and prevent it from freezing during extended cold periods. Still, if you’re not planning to run it regularly, be sure to winterize the hot tub properly to prevent damage from freezing.

Vinegar can be used as an all-purpose cleaner for many things, including hot tub filters. Soaking hot tub filters in vinegar and water for up to 24 hours can remove dirt and oil, and as a bonus, it won’t cause the water to foam after you reinstall it if there’s vinegar left on it. But make sure you still rinse it to remove any debris, dirt, or grime stuck on it.

Follow these general safety tips for spas and hot tubs:

  • Keep your exterior electrical receptacles covered and dry, especially around your hot tub and pool during periods of use.

  • Make sure you have a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) properly installed to ensure no one gets accidentally shocked or injured by electrocution.

  • Don’t use the hot tub or your pool during a thunderstorm.

  • Before using the hot tub, have a certified electrician thoroughly inspect your hot tub and its wiring to make sure you’re in full compliance with all applicable local building codes.

Where you drain a hot tub largely depends on local regulations, but you must not drain chemically treated water where it can damage the environment. Direct the water toward a sanitary sewer drain that will take it to a treatment facility. If your lawn has a dedicated drainage area that’s free from plants and foundations, you can likely drain it there. Avoid storm drains, as the hot tub water will enter waterways and could hurt aquatic life. Likewise, do not pour it out directly on any public land or where it can get into your neighbors’ property.

Using bubble bath, bath oils, bath salts, or moisturizing products that contain butters or oils can damage your jetted tub. Because of the water pump and jet mechanism, you need to be more selective with products for a jetted tub than you would for a traditional bathtub in order to keep it functioning properly and avoid expensive repairs. These products also leave residue that can feed mildew and mold, so it’s best to avoid them.
