"R&R Masonry is the best, from the office manager Robyn, to the entire crew. An estimate was given promptly after my initial call for a quote (very reasonably priced). The job was scheduled and started within days. I was promptly notified when the cement company was delayed, at no fault to Randy and his crew. Randy and his crew were professional, informative and in constant communication throughout the entire process. A concrete slab for a shed and a patio were expertly crafted with a personal touch. The crew even moved a shed and gazebo, after they cleaned up! My neighbors have even commented on how much they like their work! A HUGE bonusâ ¦ the entire crew is dog friendly! They were welcoming of my dog roaming around while they were working, and even gave him belly rubs! I plan to use R&R Masonry for all of my future home renovations!"

"Other companies quoted me much higher rates and one completely failed to get the job done. MMT were complete professionals, a pleasure to deal with, prompt, and skilled. Iâ ll be relying on them for all chimney and masonry projects and would recommend them to anyone."

"Anthony and his assistant were great. Very knowledgeable and thorough. They did a great job cleaning and inspecting our woodstove and chimney pipe, top to bottom. Would highly recommend and will definitely use them again."

"Dan did an excellent job in rebuilding the top of my chimney that had worn out over many years. He had no problems getting up on the roof. He made sure to clean up the area and take away all the old bricks. When Dan came inside to check the lower chimney in my basement for any fallen debris, he added alittle mortar in a area that was crumbling. I appreciated that extra work."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, an outdoor fireplace should use fire bricks. Fire bricks are specially designed to withstand high levels of heat and thus won’t crack as easily as regular bricks when exposed to the intense heat inside a fireplace.

You will repoint over a fraction of the old mortar, but you should scrape away 1/2 to 1 inch of mortar from the joints before repointing. Otherwise, the repointing is only masking the weakened mortar instead of actually replacing it, which could put your chimney at risk of bigger, more expensive damages later on.

When it comes to how to paint a brick chimney, consider that standard paint can seal in moisture and cause serious chimney problems. Instead, use a vapor-permeable sealant. You’ll first scrub and sand the chimney; then, you can patch any gaps with caulk and apply the sealant. We recommend hiring a pro for this job since it entails working on the roof, which comes with a lot of necessary safety precautions.

Yes, it is normal to see some minor hairline cracks in brick or mortar over time, often due to natural foundation settling. However, not all cracks are harmless. You should be concerned and contact a masonry professional for an inspection if you notice cracks that are getting wider or longer, or if new ones keep appearing. Other serious warning signs that can indicate significant structural or foundation damage include large vertical cracks (especially those that widen as they go up), stair-step cracks, L-shaped cracks, and deep horizontal cracks. Factors like temperature changes, moisture, and structural loading can also cause cracks to form or worsen.

Cobblestone is not a type of rock but a term for a mosaic or rock laid down as a surface. It used to be made from the closest available stone but now can be made from nearly any hard rock, as machining has made shaping the stone much easier and cheaper.
