"Fred's Chimney Magic refused to honor the "Groupon" promotion they advertised for a fireplace cleaning and inspection, claiming I had a "nest" in my flue. This "nest", as it turned out, consisted of a small shopping bag full of leaves and small branches (see photo below). Removing such small amounts of debris is part of any standard seasonal chimney cleaning. Not only did they try to charge me five times more that what I agreed to pay for the service prior to scheduling a service visit, they tried to upsell me on additional chimney work which had nothing to do with the basic cleaning and safety inspection I paid for (big red flag). Moreover, the two chimney sweeps they sent couldn't have looked more unhappy to be there. No. sooner did they arrive for the appointment, that they bolted into my house as if someone were chasing them--obviously looking to do a quick rush job, with literally zero effort made to explain any aspect of the process to the homeowner. They immediately seemed exasperated and jabbered to each other nervously, as if I were not even there. I felt uncomfortable with the situation from start to finish, as I could tell from the outset, based on their behavior alone, that they had no intention of cleaning our chimney that day without extorting a considerably higher fee from us. When we refused to fork over the extra money for their "nest removal service", they abruptly begged off the job and then quickly departed, visibly annoyed. The chimney sweep who did most of the talking spoke to us in tone which was blatantly condescending and rude. To make things worse, the service was scheduled just four days before Christmas, which means that we were nearly deprived of the use of our fireplace over the holidays as a result of this highly regrettable incident. Fortunately, we were able to get another Chimney sweep out to our residence that same day on extreme short notice, who promptly ascended onto our roof and brushed out our chimney for one hundred dollars less than what this company tried to charge us for the same service. See the dated photo below showing the safely working fireplace exactly one day later. There was such a pronounced lack of professionalism evident in the way the visit was conducted by this company, that I could never in good conscience recommend their services to others, nor hire them for any further work on my chimney. When I do decide to have maintenance work done on my chimney (repointing, caulking, and a new chimney cap) in the near future, I definitely won't be dealing with this company. In my sincere opinion, they just can't be trusted."

Chimney Repair questions, answered by experts

On average, a roof lasts 30 years—depending on the material. Metal roofs can last up to 70 years, while zinc, specifically, can last well over 100 years. These roofs can reach their intended life span with maintenance that includes seasonal gutter cleaning, pruning nearby trees to avoid damage, and routine inspections every year.

Metal roofs are more resistant to hail than other types of roof materials; however, hail can still damage a metal roof. The extent of the damage depends on the size of the hail and the severity of the hail storm. The type of damage a metal roof can get from hail includes dents, scratches, loose fasteners, leaks, and cracked paint.

Metal roofs do not technically require a drip edge if the roof overhangs at least one inch, because the roof's slant will cause water to flow away from the structure. But a drip edge would be an added level of protection for a metal roof to help keep moisture issues at bay.

Homeowners insurance may cover the cost to tarp a roof if the type of damage falls within your coverage. For example, roof damage caused by a natural disaster may fall within your plan, and the cost of a temporary tarp may be incorporated. In general, however, simply tarping your roof for renovations will often not fall under insurance coverage.

A metal roof may increase your home value by around $7,000 to $8,000, offering a (ROI) of 60% to 70% of installation costs. A metal roof’s longevity and durability can be a major selling point for prospective buyers—not having to think about roof replacement for the entire time you own your home is a big plus when buying a house.
