"The service that CES provided was great, they were prompt in coming, delivered the necessary drawings when promised. However, I was disappointed that Home Advisor did not provide any other Structural Engineers for me to chose."

"Sorry it took so long to write this review, but Mike was great. He used a floor plan I created and engineered our vacation home that came out beautifully. The house is a couple years old now, no problems that I know of, so I would definitely hire him again."

"I liked the way he came in and was knowledgeable about the structure. He took his time to look through the house. He make us feel comfortable about the structure, understanding and knowing that the wall we wanted to come down was a non-bearing wall."

We are an engineer's engineer offering structural engineering and vehicle parking design services. Our experience illustrates an ability to provide simple, innovative solutions to unique conditions which separates us from cookbook designers. Instead of overly conservative designs that lead to inflated construction costs, we provide designs that satisfy economic, aesthetic, and performance requirements. \n\nThornton Engineering specializes in the structural design of prestress concrete and total prime design services of parking structures, but our record shows a broad range of building types and construction techniques in our designs. In keeping with our philosophy of innovation, we do not use generalized "canned" computer design programs written by other engineers. Rather, the responsibility we have to our clients has led to the development of our own design programs.

"Originally I contracted with him because we had a lot of water in my basement.  The water was pretty high.  I had a few people off of Angie’s List come look at it and they were giving me estimates between $20,000 to $25,000.  The guy who came in from Concrete Raising gave me some good advice.  He told me not to start with an expensive solution.  He told me to try the sump pump first and see if it would work.  It seems to have solved the issue and it only cost me $4000.00."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

For Schenectady’s climate and housing, keep a moisture meter, crack monitor, and a portable dehumidifier to track foundation and basement conditions. Have temporary shoring posts, waterproof tarps, and insulation on hand for emergency support. A generator is useful during power outages, and a snow rake helps manage roof snow loads. Wind bracing straps and a level are also helpful for monitoring structural safety during projects.

Helpful?

Completing structural engineering projects in Schenectady enhances comfort by improving insulation, reducing drafts, and controlling moisture—crucial for both winter and summer extremes. Reinforcing load-bearing walls and upgrading foundations can prevent issues like sagging floors or roof leaks. These improvements also allow for finished basements or open layouts, increasing usable space and overall property value while making your home safer and more energy-efficient.

Helpful?

In Schenectady, homes with stone or brick foundations, balloon framing, or multiple additions often present unique challenges. Look for uneven floors, visible cracks near load-bearing walls, or outdated wiring like knob-and-tube. High water tables and evidence of past flooding can complicate foundation work. Large radiators or steam heat systems may also affect layout changes, so a thorough inspection is key before starting any project.

Helpful?

In Schenectady, address urgent issues like foundation settling, bowing walls, or active water leaks right away, especially before winter’s freeze-thaw cycles. Schedule major structural repairs between late spring and early fall for best results. After heavy storms or rapid snowmelt, inspect for new cracks or moisture. For older homes or before major renovations, a professional evaluation helps prioritize structural safety and avoid future emergencies.

Helpful?

In Schenectady, prioritize safety by installing sturdy temporary barriers and locking doors to work areas, especially during load-bearing wall or foundation work. Use dust containment systems to limit airborne particles, and schedule demolition or loud tasks when children and pets are away. For older homes, test for lead paint or asbestos before starting. Always keep tools secured and maintain clear, well-marked pathways around the project zone.
