"The service that CES provided was great, they were prompt in coming, delivered the necessary drawings when promised. However, I was disappointed that Home Advisor did not provide any other Structural Engineers for me to chose."

"Sorry it took so long to write this review, but Mike was great. He used a floor plan I created and engineered our vacation home that came out beautifully. The house is a couple years old now, no problems that I know of, so I would definitely hire him again."

"I liked the way he came in and was knowledgeable about the structure. He took his time to look through the house. He make us feel comfortable about the structure, understanding and knowing that the wall we wanted to come down was a non-bearing wall."

We are an engineer's engineer offering structural engineering and vehicle parking design services. Our experience illustrates an ability to provide simple, innovative solutions to unique conditions which separates us from cookbook designers. Instead of overly conservative designs that lead to inflated construction costs, we provide designs that satisfy economic, aesthetic, and performance requirements. \n\nThornton Engineering specializes in the structural design of prestress concrete and total prime design services of parking structures, but our record shows a broad range of building types and construction techniques in our designs. In keeping with our philosophy of innovation, we do not use generalized "canned" computer design programs written by other engineers. Rather, the responsibility we have to our clients has led to the development of our own design programs.

"Originally I contracted with him because we had a lot of water in my basement.  The water was pretty high.  I had a few people off of Angie’s List come look at it and they were giving me estimates between $20,000 to $25,000.  The guy who came in from Concrete Raising gave me some good advice.  He told me not to start with an expensive solution.  He told me to try the sump pump first and see if it would work.  It seems to have solved the issue and it only cost me $4000.00."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

No, a structural engineer is not the same as a builder. A structural engineer is an expert in all things related to the structural integrity of a building. The structural engineer is responsible for calculating the correct materials in terms of load-bearing capacity and overall structural safety. Structural engineers do not perform the actual building of the house or other structures. Rather, the builder executes the plans and designs specified by the structural engineer.

No, squeaky floors do not always mean there is structural damage. The noise is often caused by friction from issues like loose floorboards, gaps between the subfloor and joists, or loose subflooring. While many squeaks are harmless, persistent or worsening noise could indicate a more severe problem. If you notice other signs of structural damage—such as soft or sagging floors, cracks running from the wall to the ceiling, or horizontal cracks in your foundation—it's best to have a professional inspect your floor to determine the root cause.

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.

In many areas, advice from a structural engineer or an architect will be required by your building department before you can remove a wall, but even if it’s not necessary, it’s a good idea. Accidentally removing a load-bearing wall—even if a general contractor advises that it’s safe—can cause major structural damage, putting you and your family at risk and potentially costing thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in property damage.

A 4-inch-thick concrete slab can support around 4,000 pounds per square foot if a contractor reinforces the slab with rebar, while that same slab without reinforcements will support closer to 1,000 pounds. For the purposes of a patio, 4 inches in thickness without reinforcement should suffice unless you’re installing heavy kitchen equipment or a hot tub on it. In those cases, reinforcing your slab and sticking with 4 inches of thickness should provide plenty of strength.
