Physically, the most challenging part of finishing a basement is installing egress windows or doors when the space is below ground level. Mentally, the hardest part may be envisioning the project and planning around load-bearing and mechanical obstacles.

If your basement often leaks after heavy rain, it’s probably caused by hydrostatic pressure. When the ground is saturated with water, it can put pressure on the exterior of your home’s foundation, causing cracks in the basement wall and pushing water through any existing weak spots. Over time, hydrostatic pressure can cause structural damage to your home.

You may have to dig out drain valves if they are buried under dirt. This method isn’t ideal, and it increases the chance of clogs and damage. Ideally, a drip irrigation system buries drain valves in a gravel pocket so they are easier to access and better-protected. If you have trouble accessing drain valves, hire a sprinkler professional to find them safely and efficiently.

In many cases, yes, a damp basement can be bad for your health. Not only can damp air affect your lungs, but it can promote mold growth and pest infestation. Mold spores can be dangerous to breathe in, as can waste particles from insects and rodents attracted to the moisture. Damp, moldy air can also move up into your living area. As such, it’s crucial to fix any basement moisture problems as soon as they crop up.

External pressure on the basement wall can cause it to bow inward. Soil, heavy with water saturation, is commonly the main culprit. The soil exerts immense pressure on the wall, causing it to fail, at least partially. This is known as hydrostatic pressure—these situations can occur after rainfall or simply due to regular groundwater presence and may be temporary or more permanent.
